It's my 30th this year and I'm looking to source some wine from my birth year. I can only budget about $300 and would like 3 bottles, but am flexible, would even take a chance on some lesser wines. If anyone here can help me find anything I would appriciate it. Email me at caturack at hotmail dot com.

Thanks

I think most people are going to tell you that '78 Bordeaux won't be holding up well. I have a 1978 Chateau Fonbadet that I will open soon perhaps I would be willing to part with it. I really want to see for myself how it is though.

I would say look into Napa but I can't find much from Napa from that year that has a very long drinking window. You might want to take a chance on a Montelena Estate. That is what I would be leaning towards. A 1978 Mondavi Reserve might not be a bad choice either.

I agree with everything Sticky said. The 1978s from CA I'd be looking for are the wines from Diamond Creek, BV GdL, Mondavi and Sterling Reserves, and Heitz Martha's.

Just one more sip.

I doubt any of those meet your $100 price criteria.

I've been slowly drinking a case of 1978 Lafite that I bought from Christe's back in 2001. I think I have 3-4bottles left.Definitely a mature wine, it's actually delicate and pretty with light sweet fruit. I bet you'd enjoy it. $250 if you'd like a bottle.

He does not have to restrict himself to 100 per bottle, just 300 total. Either way, it is tough to come up with 3 good 1978 bottles for ~300. The Montelena on its own would take up most of the funds. The Mondavi is cheaper.

I recently bought a '78 Heitz Martha's Vineyard. I think it cost me 150'ish plus shipping. I had one for my 30th and decided to get another one to hold for my 35th. I was fairly happy with it.
