I was hoping I was wrong and "thread-crapping" didn't occur in this forum, but apparently it does. Not obtuse, just disappointed.

I researched the prices, and the prices I put out seemed reasonable initial prices. If you think the prices are too high, and you are interested in purchasing, then make an offer. If you honestly attempting to make some kind of positive contribution, please do so.

These prices are going for nearly $100 more than anything on Winezap. The '74 is a rare collectable, but, who in their right mind would pay nearly $800 for a 35 year old bottle that's over the hill?

I bought both the 84 and 85 heitz martha's two years ago and last year respectively for 55$ each from a reputable dealer if that's any indication of your pricing.

Thanks for those that provided constructive feedback.

The minimum price I'm seeing on winezap for the Marthas as follows. Note that the non-Martha's is typically much lower.

70 - nothing on winezap, but the regular is 129 - 200
74 - 700 to 1400
84 - 149 to 300, non-Martha's less than 100
85 - 249 to 390 (85 regular cab - 59)

Wine commune:
70 - $504, nothing for the regular.


So, my 74 asking price is about 75$ greater than winezap minimum, and the 1985 is maybe 25 more than the minimum on winezap. Not sure where the $100 figure came from in one of the above posts, but maybe comparing to the non-Martha's stuff.

I'm not looking to rip anyone off, just get a fair price for the wines.

Bottom line, if someone wants to make an offer for these (knowing the prices are negotiable), feel free.

So, as something as a newbie on this forum, perhaps someone would provide specific guidance as to how to price. As I wrote before, the prices are consistent with the prices I've seen on the web (winezap and winecommune):
70 - Winecommune 500, my request 300
74 - Winezap 700 to 1400, my request 775 (an exceptional wine)
84 - Winezap 149 to 300, my request 175
85 - Winezap 249 to 390, my request 200

Well, I think you can start with 30% off from the lowest market price.

You can price them however you want, but you'll notice they're not selling at the prices you've posted. People here are fairly savvy when buying wine. That 1974 Heitz Martha's was a wonderful wine the few times I've had it, but I wouldn't pay anything like $775 for it and I doubt anyone else here will. The 1970 and 1984 were just as fine when I had them. I don't think I ever had the 1985. You've got some good wines there. You might do better to send them to an auction, rather than try to get those prices here.

I'll try to give you some real help on pricing.

When I look at pricing, I basically figure out where else I can buy the wine and at how much to determine value. But, on top of that provenance is a big deal when it comes to expensive bottles, especially older bottles like your 74 Martha's.

There's a load of retailers offering it for $799 and it'd be likey that I could call them up and get the price down.

The last bottle at auction sold for $479 in May at Bonhams and Butterfield.

So, if I were interested as a buyer, I'd first ask you where you got it and how it has been stored. Of course, if you have a reputation for maintaining a well kept cellar that helps too. But, it takes time to build that reputation.

I bet you may have received emails asking these questions already.

As far as winecommune, I wouldn't use them to price. As far as selling throuh them, I think you have to pay them a % now (was different in the old days). You might check it out.

I don't use winezap often. But another new thng on the market is vinfolio. They'll list wines that they have sold and the dates/prices. If the bottle has actually sold, that's an idication that yours could too at the same or near the same price. But again, provennce could swing prices of the expensive bottles quite a bit. A quick glance, but I don;t see any sales of 74 Heitz on VF.
