Blankiet sent me an email asking if I wanted to stay on their list despite my not ordering the last two times they made offers.

This makes it abundantly clear to me that Blankiet is not the next Sine Qua Non, Harlan etc.

Anybody else think I should stay on the list or god forbid order some $100 wine that scores repeatedly in the low 90's unless new scores have come out that I'm not aware of?

If you like their wine at $100/bottle despite scores lower than you like and you can afford it, stay on the list.

But if it were me, I would dump them...there is so much other good stuff out there for that price and lower.

Personally I would just ask to be kept on the list:

1. It can't hurt, you still don't have to buy
2. From what I have heard the '02 Cab is a definite step up from previous releases

Why in the world would you make the decision to stay or leave their wine club based on ratings??? If you like the wine and the winery, buy the wine. If not, leave!

Why...? That's a dumb question. I can't possibly taste every wine out there.

If it rates only 92 points from critics I have to rely on, I can buy Napa cab for $40 that rates as highly. A premium of over $60 bucks for a wine that is less than great is a waste of money.

I don't usually shell out a hundred bucks for a newcomer wine that wants to be a hundred dollar wine.

I haven't tried it because I haven't ordered any up until now.

Hence the question........... Roll Eyes

Does that clear it up for you?

If it is just a "newcomer" wine priced at $100, then why did you sign up for the wine club?

I didn't mean to come down on you too hard, I just get tired of people judging the quality of a wine on one guys score.

I have been in the wine industry for quite some time, and it is always amazing to see what one guys number can do for a brand. More than once in blind tastings I have conducted with winemakers and sommeliers, the wines rated outstanding by certain wine critics end up towards the bottom.

That is why I say, only buy what you can taste first...or at least have it recomended by a friend.

Cheers!

Ok, I don't give a rat's ass how hard you come down on anyone. Since you have some sort of reading comprehension or learning disability let me sum it up for you.

I signed up based on winemaker and vineyard manager. Turley-Wetlaufer and Abreu.

While I have enjoyed their other wines, try Google you knob, I am not paying that kind of coin for something that doesn't measure up to their other efforts.

Clear as mud for you?

By the way, stock boy at Beverages and More doesn't qualify you as "in the business".

And if you work for Justin wines, ask Justin Baldwin why his last five efforts have been rather pitiful.

Gigond Ass,

Quite often WS or RP will rate a wine 96+ points and the other will rate it in the mid-high 80's. What do you do in this case?

I can't trust JL to have any consistency. So to be honest, I ignore it.

If Parker rates it 96+ and I don't like it, I can at least sell it without losing any money.

I rarely sell for profit but I will unload something that I don't care for if I can do it without a major loss.

Gigond Ass,

I think the whole score thing is pretty tough to follow. I am pretty sure Cakebread usually scores around 88 points. I beleive Columbia Crest scores in that range and somtimes higher. We all know the huge price difference there. Sometimes I prefer a Cabernet that received an 88 over a cab that receivd 90.
The 2001 Grgich Hills got a 76 from JL and RP gave it 86. I agree with the 76. Scores are arbitrary and ultimately an opoinion that you may or may not agree with. Of cours you already know that.
I beleive for the $100 you should be able to get a wine that is phenomenal and at that price you should not settle for less. Unfortunately the critics score may differ from your personal score.

You are probably right tbird. I never thought of comparing Colgin, Bryant Family, Marcassin et al. with Columbia Crest, Grgich Hills and Cakebread. Big Grin

You learn something new every day.

Not one person has chimed in and suggested I actually purchase the Blankiet.

Geez dude. I think that you might have an anger problem.

I simply explained my side of it, and you went off the deep end.

And no I don't work for Justin Wines.

If you like the WM and VM, then buy the wine!

I beleive Wine Sectator and other publications are all using a 100 point scale. Whether you have thought of it or not, if these wines have appeared in the same publication and received a score based on the same criteria, they have been compared.

I'm not mad at or confused by some of the worthless responses and responders.

I'm simply mocking you. Cool

Actually, if Laube give a California 96+, you can pretty much count on turning that bottle for at least 60% profit over winery retail. With Parker's 96+ these days, it's hit and miss in auctions.

That may be true. Considering that Laube has rated few cabs above 95 THIS YEAR.

Who knows what he will do in the future. I would guess even he is mystified by his recent scores. Smile

Refuse the wine.

It's funny, some people would pay $100 for a bag of Helen Turley's feces! Someone bought me a bottle of Blankiet as a gift a couple of years back and my impression was, "Pretty good $25.00 Cabernet." I was stunned when I saw it on a shelf.

My opinion - all sizzle, no steak.
