I have limited experience with CdP's, but I had the 02 Rayas Reserve at a food/wine tasting at a very nice restaurant in Napa a few months ago and it was one of (if not the most) disappointing wine I have ever tasted. Color was almost like a rose and had no fruit..tasted like a mouthfull of black pepper. I realize 02 was not a good vintage but i expected more from a top producer. Hopefully some day I'll get to try another vintage and it will show better.

Unfortunately you started with a bad one - '02 is easily the worst vintage CdP has seen in a generation and there were only a handful of drinkable reds produced. Pick any other vintage since '98 though, and you'll more than likely hit a winner...

I bought a few bottles of 05 Vieux Donjon, and decided to pop one and drink it over two days to help decide if I should get a few more. Just going from memory, the first day was just eye-poppingly huge, bright red fruit, enormous spice, and juicy acidity. Absolutely delicious, but more Linne Calodo than Rhone Valley. Day two was like an entirely different wine, featuring the stony minerality, deep black fruit, smoke and olive profile which was distinctively CdP. Serious concentration and complexity to this wine. I went back for a few more bottles the next day, great stuff.

Sheesh, what did you follow it up with a 1997 Village Burg?! 2002 was a terrible vintage for everyone, rarely does that happen. Try the 2003, you won't be disappointed.

Are you referring to the Clos des Papes? If so, it sounds awesome. Probably smart to get it now. I have some coming as well, but unfourtunately, it will probably be awhile before any is consummed

I just tasted the Cote la Ronde 2005 this weekend, and it was very promising, I'll get some of those next month. Is the Cristia the standard bottling? I normaly don't find it that inspiring... however the Cuvée Renaisance is very good.

James, Have you tasted the 2005 Quartz Les Caillou CDP? I think you rated the 2000 with 95 points. I am interested in picking up a couple of bottles of the 05.

Mimik: Yes, I tasted the Domaine Vacheron-Pouizin Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine du Caillou Les Quartz '05 with Philippe Cambie, the oenologist who consults with the domaine. It's a blend of %80 Grenache and %20 Syrah. My notes based on that sample read: "Very plush up front but with great grip on the back end. Super minerally with loads of red and black fruits. Combines power and grace with terrific mouthfeel." As usual though, I do not score wines that aren't tasted blind. And unfortunately, the domaine and/or their importer never submits the finished wines for review (I've bought the occasional sample over the year to keep tabs on them). so I can't give you an official review. If you've liked them in the past however, I don't think you'll be disappointed in the '05.

So far:
Vieux Donjon Clos des Papes Saint Prefert Auguste Favier Saint Prefert Charles Giraud
(and all prior to scores coming out to boot!)
Want to get:
Vieux Telegraphe Beaucastel Janasse
For some reason, I'm on the fence with the Pegau. That was a must-have a couple of months ago. There are still some more 2004s I would like to grab too - Will it ever end????
