OK, keep in mind that I live in Utah so state-owned stores are my only option. I am listing prices for each bottle. Here we go...

1996 Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin - La Grande Dame $150
Krug Grand Cuvee $175
1998 Dom $145
1996 Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill $192
1996 Dom Rose Magnum $560
1998 Duval-Leroy Blanc de Chard $48
NV Jean La Llement Cuvee Reserve $64
NV Jean Milan Brut - Blanc de blancs Carte Blanche $52
NV Taittinger Brut - La Francaise $53

These bottles will likely be consumed in the near-term. Smile

I've seen the 1996 Dom P Rose around here, but for maybe $325 (off the top of my head). So I'm thinking that the magnum for $560 might be a decent deal. I've been thinking about picking up some nice bubbly as well...

The 96's are quite extrordinary. The Krug 96 brings tears to grown men's eyes (google James Halliday 96 Krug). The Dom is right there. La Grande Dame also best in years. They are all pricy though. I suppose for drinking near term the 98s might make more sense.

1996 Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin - La Grande Dame $150 -- Worth it relative to what is in the bottle, but I bought mine for less.

Krug Grand Cuvee $175 -- easy pass.

1998 Dom $145 -- easy pass.

1996 Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill $192 -- probably a buy... but I haven't had it.

1996 Dom Rose Magnum $560 -- sounds like a great price, but I haven't had it.

1998 Duval-Leroy Blanc de Chard $48 -- decent price for a serious Champagne.

NV Jean La Llement Cuvee Reserve $64 -- no idea

NV Jean Milan Brut - Blanc de blancs Carte Blanche $52 -- no idea

NV Taittinger Brut - La Francaise $53 -- easy pass

I belive that the PR is a decent price.

The DP Rose Magnum (if it really is a mag) is a steal - but needs a lot of time from everything that I've read. If buying to drink soon, I would probably go with the PR.

The prices pretty much suck across the boards but then you already knew that. The one wine in that list that I'd put above all others versus the price being paid is the 1996 Pol Roger Churchill. Simply a stunning wine with tons of long term potential and not even 10% higher than the best wine-searcher price in the land.

If you want a good deal on a wine to drink 10-20 years down the road spring for the 1996 Dom Perignon Rose Magnum. Wonderful wine and in that format it should be a beauty 15-20 years down the road.

Hold the Churchill as long as you can, and while poor pricing overall, it is what it is.

Enjoy! Cool

CORRECTION: gigabit, sorry, I did not notice the '96 Dom Rose was a Magnum. (a little early I guess) Buy.

Thanks drab for pointing it out.

If you're spending $50:
Look for Charles Heidseick Brut Reserve and 2000 M&C Grand Vintage.

The 96 Grande Dame is dynamite, though. The 96 Dom Rose price is a really good price.

Utah is harsh for pricing, even our local monopoly has it for $170, so based on the positive responses here I think I'll go grab a bottle.

Dunder-

The pricing for recent releases is not bad; I've compared it to other local markets. However, anything older is another story. Mad

No worries; I will always go to W+A for my champagne advice. Wink

I figured the Pol Roger SWC was a buy, and I would cellar it for 5-10 years before consuming, as well as the Dom Rose.

Would any of these bottles be ready for consumption soon? Say...this weekend? Big Grin

1996 Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin - La Grande Dame $150 Buy but not a long term ager
Krug Grand Cuvee $175 Expensive I'd pass
1998 Dom $145 Ok
1996 Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill $192 More than I paid, going to be great someday
1996 Dom Rose Magnum $560 Great price. Need to wait for 10 years to drink
1998 Duval-Leroy Blanc de Chard $48 One of the best here
NV Jean La Llement Cuvee Reserve $64
NV Jean Milan Brut - Blanc de blancs Carte Blanche $52
NV Taittinger Brut - La Francaise $53 You can get this anytime

These bottles will likely be consumed in the near-term. Smile

None of these that I've had aren't ready.

For drinking right now, the '96 La Grande Dame is dynamite.

OK, a few more I am considering:

NV Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve $47
1999 Perrier Jouet Brut Fleur de Champagne $120
1999 Dom $145
1999 Bollinger Brut La Grande Annee $112

Thoughts?

Once again the prices are not that good but out of that list the NV Heidsieck is a nice little Champagne that you can feel free to pop any time as you wish. The 1999 Bollinger Grande Annee is a good wine but about $20.00 a bottle too high in my opinion if you can stomach the purchase.

Fantastic! I picked up a bottle earlier today, thinking that I had seen positive comments about it from you, and others.
