Found something to like about the sea of tranquility at Vinocellar: There is a function that allows you to ignore posters. Can't we get that here please?

Cheers!

I can't hear you.......!

Nice. Wonder why that is needed? Are there mean spirited and ignorant people out there?

With all due respect, King, I think we oughta take care of that stuff ourselves! In my 6 months and too many posts, I've noticed that it is a small percentage of posters who are ..^5#@%%. Many of us are annoying, but not harmful! Wink

Keep on putting it out there, most of us are enjoying each other!

DW,
Agree about the very small percentage. Have the utmost respect for the vast majority. Still it would make this a great place -- at least in my opinion -- if I had the ability to ignore those in the miniscule.

Cheers!

I have the ability to ignore the miniscule! Unfortunately, I sometimes ignore the important -

What, honey? The trash? Oh....

With all due respect King, I find that function pointless on VC. It is a pretty simple matter to have the self discipline to ignore posts voluntarily. I am not so sensitive that I require the system to censor on my behalf.

Private messaging, however, would be a tremendous feature to implement here - perhaps it would reduce the amount of useless personal drivel that finds it's way onto these boards.

Eric,
Agreed there too. But I kind of like scrolling through threads and seeing "you chose to ignore this poster.''
That said, anything would be an improvement. PMing in particular.

Cheers!

Actually, I think this feature is built into UBB. If you open any member's profile, you'll see the ICQ Instant Messaging box.

I don't think it would cost anything for WS to activate this feature if people wanted it, though never having used it, I'm not sure whether I'm correct in this or not. Still, it never hurts to have more options.

Cheers.

It may not cost in terms of development or licensing... (or maybe it does, I don't know). But it costs in regards to Server storage space, processing overhead, and other server related costs. Same reason they refuse to archive beyond a certain point.

At this point, memory is practically free. Especially for a bunch of text data.

Server storage, while being much cheaper than in years past, is still not free. Neither is the cost of administering said server, the electricity required to operate said server, etc. There is also the increase in network traffic, etc.

I am not making the case that this is a huge burden of cost, simply pointing out that there is no such thing as a free lunch.

ormbee,

really off topic here, but we might do that Monte Rosso Zin tasting this month and I wanted to get you an invite. shoot me an email at paul@hockeyguy.com

So not really off topic, I've said for two years I'd like WS to turn on the feature that would allow people to share their emails in their profiles if they so choose.

Of course not, my only point was that using server storage costs as an excuse to not do something is pretty unbelievable. If you care not to administrate something, fine, but storage costs should not be the excuse. I don't really expect to be able to go to Frye's and get disks for free Big Grin

King, the PM feature and the ignore feature are certainly useful. I use the former a lot and, though I do not use the latter, I can understand why some would.

One nice thing too, is that any VC poster can report a questionable post to the Moderator Crü over there (not sure what they see when you hit the notify moderator button at the bottom of every post, but I am sure it sends them some sort of notification).

If a forum member is so thin-skinned that comments raise their blood pressure, the ignore feature would be good. I don't need it. Nothing I read here bothers me. My buttons are too hard to push, I guess. Smile

Just one more sip.

Smaug- TN's are no longer deleted. Keith Scott granted that wish over a year ago.

TJ- You can automatically report posts to moderators here also by clicking on the triange icon with the ! in it at the top of each post.

this is the first time i have heard of anyone using that feature on vc. the last time we spoke of it we all pretty much were in agreement that everyone had something to offer to the group and no one saw the need to ignore anyone else. it amazing that someone would need a computer to protect their eyes and feeling from other peoples' posts.

KOH,

if you don't like vc's "sea of tranquility" than how are you even seeing these "ignore" posting coming up on your screen? for someone who doesn't have much need for VC, you sure know a lot about the going ons over there.

Anthony- I wouldn't exactly call VC a "sea of tranquility" although it is certainly more tame than WS. After all, the most recent round of trouble started on Vinocellar before it spilled over here.

The VC post that started the trouble was posted on 1/24 at 5:22 pm at this link. This post was followed very shortly by another personal attack on 1/25 which can be found here. Interestingly, both of these personal attacks have not been deleted by the moderators of VC despite numerous requests.

It wasn't until 3 days later that the King of Hearts defended himself on WS in response to the personal attacks started on VC in this post which led to some deleted posts.

KoH- I do agree with Anthony about one thing though. I don't see much use for the "ignore" function. It only stops you from seeing it. It does not stop insults or attacks from being publicly posted in the first place. Only the moderators can do that.

They have been now, as has the entire thread, and it was the right thing to do. So thanks to all.

Vino Me-- Thanks for pointing that feature out here on the WS to me. I was oblivios, it seems. D'oh!

Ant-- There are plenty of folks who DO use the Ignore feature over on VC. Trust me, I know. While I do not, I know of several people who do. The reasons I have been given is because, I (like you a bit, possiby) have Babbling Idiot Syndrome. I post too much, sometimes with things that are not purely wine-related. So for those with limited time and they don't want to digress into my posts (as they are typically not 100% wine related), the ignore function is perfect for them. Of course, when I am posting about wine, well, I guess they won't read that either. No biggie either way. Cool

Vino Me-- Thanks, by the way, for pointing out those links (now gone). It seems that your pointing them out (for all to see) brought the appropriate attention and action that was needed. Cool

TJ- I must commend the moderators at VC for taking care of this although I do not think that my post had much if anything to do with it. I'm sure it was something they were looking into on their own. I'm sure running a board can be very daunting and time consuming.

Anthony,
Simple answer really. I have a brain and I know how to read. And I also write without employing tough-guy vulgarity. Wink
