Ok. Here's another newbie question....The '02 Caymus SS (Special Selection) and the '02 Caymus are both rated 93 by WS. Besides the additional three years of drinking window, what else justifies the $140 price point of the Caymus SS over the $75 price point of the regular Caymus?

Is there that much of a difference (i.e. better grapes, longer barrel aging, etc.)? And if so, shouldn't there be a difference in score as the SS technically should be a bolder and more complex cab?

I bought a couple bottles of the SS just because I figured if I was going to spend $70/bottle I might as well spend $140 and get the best, but I think I may try to get a regular Caymus to do a tasting comparison with a few years from now.

When it comes to California wines, go with what Robert Parker and Steve Tanzer have to say about them. They are far superior to James Laube in my opinion and have better drinking windows.

The regular Caymus is what I would think of as a wine that you could get into in a couple years and is about a 12 to 15 year wine.

The Special Select, there are people I have talked to that say the wines from the 1980s are drinking really good now. If they are still made the same way that there should tell you a big difference.

I have had several of the regular Caymus (98,99,01) and only one of the SS (01). I found the SS to be much richer..the SS is a great wine but at $140, I would pass (you should be able to find it closer to $100-120 with a little research).

The Special Selection has recently become just another a large production wine. At 10,000 cases it is really nothing special. Good but certainly not worth the triple digit price tag. Our blind tastings have proved this repeatedly. There are so many Cabs that are superior to the SS and for a lot less money. Caymus is still living off their reputation from the 80's and 90's.

The 1997 Caymus was very good. The 1997 Caymus SS was sublime. Dunno about 2002.

The 2002 Caymus is terrific. The 2002 Caymus SS is even better and definitely one of my all time fav's.

I have only had a couple of the SS, and never thought it worth the tariff. Now that their NAPA is pushing $65 to $70, it isn't worth that either.

Iv'e been destroyed about this topic before, but I can get 3 bottles of the Caymus Napa for the price of the SS and I can get 3 bottles of the Joseph Phelps Napa for the price of the Insignia, so I bought the Napa's for the price.

Both of my bottles of Caymus ('02 Napa and '02 SS) were gifts... Cool
