We heard it on Public TV programme about wine appretiation and I quote:

Here is the solution to what to do with 1/2 bottles leftover put in the fridge to have the next day:
pour the glass,
put in microwave for 15 seconds and this would bring the temperature from 42 F in the fridge to...65F with NO DETRIMENT TO THE WINE.

Furthermore, when the guy told about this method to one of the Chateau personel in Bordeaux, the woman fumed and told the Chateau owner (and we are talking Second Growth Chateaux owner) about it, the Chateaux owner remarked:
So? I do the same thing!

One of our memebers whose fiancee is out of town has made an experiment:

and here are his findings:

quote:
Anyway, I poured a glass from the bottle right out of the fridge and then waited until the temp came up to 65°.

Once the target temp was reached, the second glass was poured from the fridge and placed in the microwave for 15 seconds on high.

Remove wine from microwave and swirl. I think this is an important part to ensure proper temperature distribution in the glass.

Take temp with thermometer. temp was 66°. Almost perfect.

Taste each one and.......

They are almost identical. Almost. I actually think that the one which was in the microwave was a little better. Not sure why but it seemed that the time it took for the other one to come up to temperature naturally had allowed it to get a little too much air.

Note of caution - Be sure that your wineglass which is destined for nukeville does not have metallic etching on it. I almost used a glass that had the name of a winery labelled in gold. That would have been an interesting twist, but one that I did not care to explore today.

I find it very interesting, even though on the surface it looks and sounds like tenderizing steak with a truck

are you up to experimenting yourself and posting the results?
I think leaving the bottle overnite changes the wine more than anything else.

I've been doing that for ages to wines straight out of the fridge. I've not noticed any significant detriment, in fact they seem to open up nicely. Obviously this only works for reds that don't need decanting

Once I visited Smith-Madrone. It was the middle of winter and that places is a barn. Charles nuked their Cabernet before we tasted it.

The big problem is that the wine doesn't heat evenly. You need to give it a few seconds then swirl it. After that you can always give it a few seconds more - just like softening butter without melting it.

Our company used to provide butter and a microwave. My boss's idea was to nuke the butter a little so that it would spread on toast. His method was to hit the 1 minute button and catch it at about the right time for it to be soft. Trouble was that he failed to hover and one minute later there was a pool of melted butter.

He would just end up with hot wine.

My first reaction when I heard it on TV was:
the guy is nuts.
But after the experiemnt been performed and results been published, I got less sceptical.

Dave, our member says the same thing about swirling and un-eveness of heat distribution. Yours and his findings are good enough for me to try it the next time my better half visit her relatives.
