Reading Vino Me's thread on the German Vintages of the 21st Century got me interested in buying more riesling.

I missed the 05's when they first came out. However, a wine store I know has some 05s for sale:

2005 Dr. Pauly Bergweiler Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese $32
2005 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2-S $40
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Kabinett $20
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Spatlese Graacher Himmelrich $35
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Spatlese Wehlener Sonnenuhr $37
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Spatlese $28
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese $35
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese $35
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Auslese Wehlener Sonnenuhr $50

At these prices, are any of these worthwhile picking up, or should I go for the 2007s instead? They have the following 07s for sale:

2007 JJ Prum Riesling Auslese Wehlener Sonnenuhr $50
2007 JJ Prum Riesling Spatlese Wehlener Sonnenuhr $50
2007 JJ Prum Riesling Spatlese Graacher Himmelrich $40
2007 JJ Prum Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett $40
2007 JJ Prum Riesling Bernkastler Badstube Kabinett $30
2007 JJ Prum Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett $30
2007 JJ Prum Riesling Kabinett $30

Your thoughts or advice are most welcome.

If I was you, I would figure out how much I can buy and I would split my purchases between the 2 vintages but 2/3 being from '05.

Also, forget the first 3 on your list and I guess the spatlese with no vineyard designation is in fact the Bernkasteler Badstube, right?
Hope this helps.

My advice can be only very limited, since i did not try the JJ Prum Wines, unfortunately.

The 2005 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr ** from Molitor is worth the price (i payed some 30 Euro directly at the producer)

Well, his is not the 2 stars and for this price I really doubt it's better than the J.J's.

OK, not 2 stars.
You quoted 2005 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2-S $40.
I thought Auslese 2-S meant 2 Stars.

I would go with these, but I haven't had the other two producers.

2005 JJ Prum Riesling Spatlese Graacher Himmelrich $35
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Spatlese Wehlener Sonnenuhr $37
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Auslese Wehlener Sonnenuhr $50

I would choose these as well. The prices are very fair on these. 05's are becoming hard to come by. I presume you being in Florida that the wines are from B-21. The gentleman(owner?) I spoke with there back when I ordered most of my 05's was exceptionally knowledgeable about JJ Prum. If you have the chance to talk to him it is well worth it.

I'd probably add the 2005 Kabinett also. Its a good value and one to drink now and let the others age a while.

I would buy as much of the 2005 JJ Prum as possible and if there is a budget left over, buy the 2005 Markus Molitor as well. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. The wines are made in relatively low quantities. So if you can find them now, stock up if you can.

I've had the 2001 JJ Prum Sonnehur Spatlese ($35) and 2003 Auselese Himmelrich ($30) and the 2004 Markus Molitor ($25). All fantastic wines for the price IMHO.

I disagree, this is overpriced and this is not a real kabinett.

Of the wines you mentioned, here are the ones which would be at the top of my purchase list:

2005 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2-S $40
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Spatlese Graacher Himmelrich $35
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Spatlese Wehlener Sonnenuhr $37
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese $35
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese $35
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Auslese Wehlener Sonnenuhr $50 (I rated this 95 points the last time I had it)

This was my first jump into German Riesling for aging, and since 2007 was my boy's birth year, I'm slowly acquiring 2007s as my budget permits.

As such, and this is not an advertisement for Total Wine, but I picketed up four bottles of JJ Prum yesterday and used the $40 off of $200 coupon that is on their website and is good through 10/04. Since I only got four bottles, it worked out to be $10 less per bottle. I ended up with:

2007 JJ Prum Riesling Auslese Wehlener Sonnenuhr $54.99-$10= $44.99 each (after coupon) X 3
2007 JJ Prum Riesling Spatlese Graacher Himmelrich $39.99-$10= $29.99 each (after coupon) X 1

Last week I used their $15 off of $100 to pick up three of the 2007 Dr. Heidemanns-Bergweiler Graacger Himmelreich Auslese for $29.99 (before coupon) that the WS Insider just gave 93 points.

Total Wine (Orlando)

Here is the link at the Orlando, FL site. I checked another FL shop and it had it too. It is in the "Newsletter September 18, 2008" link over on the right side of the front page.

You probably can't miss with any of those. JJPrum is good in both '05 and '07, though there are some stylistic differences obviously. Most people consider Prum's best to be Auslese and Spatlese, so I'd focus on those rather than the Kabinett... but even Prum's Kabinetts should be fairly good in '07. Plan to put them all down for quite a while... they're typically well-dosed with sulfur and will need to sleep for best results.

Vino Me,

Thanks a lot for your recommendations. (and the others who posted here as well).

I bought:

2005 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2-S x 3
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Spatlese Graacher Himmelrich x 6
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Spatlese Wehlener Sonnenuhr x 6
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Bernkasteler Badstube Auslese x 12
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese x 12
2005 JJ Prum Riesling Auslese Wehlener Sonnenuhr x4 (they only had 4 of these left)

Again, thanks for all the great advice.

Wow, that's a great haul. I guess that's where all the JJ Prum allocations went to.
