Well then....it's nice to be pleasantly surprised by a wine when setting expectations too low. I'm normally not a fan of Opus but like to keep a few in the cellar for shits and giggles. What a wonderful showing for this bottle that yet gives me hope for other future pleasurable Opus experiences.
This very much reminds me of a Pichon Baron of similar age from a strong vintage...maybe even the 89 though the Opus is showing more resolved tannins and a tad leaner than the 89 PB. Beautiful dark fruit and burning embers on the nose with loads of leather, grill smoke, herbs and beef blood on the palate. Beautifully drinking wine and right in it's peak drinking window. At $200, I don't know that you'll get a lot better value in BDX.
