In addition to the obscene number of blatantly obvious spelling errors already identified, there is one of my pet-peeve grammar mistakes. To which I say - Learn the language if you want any credibility!!
Being a relative newbie here I am amazed by the one-hit-wonders on this topic. I feel like I am rubber necking on a highway with a car wreck with these idiots.
There are days when I do miss the entertainment over here.
Some good posts by Brad Coelho, Brian Loring, GA, BO, WIML, DnV...keep 'em coming.
It's very simple really. The awards are based on a wine list, as submitted by the restaurants. If I'm headed to a city I've not been before, I'll check out the list and make some phone calls. The responsibility is mine. I am not going to run around blaming the WS for my choice. Have you no sense of personal responsibility? The award list issue is a great service to the readers. Don't change a thing.
To some of you one timers...to say the wine ratings cannot be trusted is moronic. Seriously. Here's a thought for all of you questioning WS reviewing wines from wineries that also buy ad space. Find a nice glossy in the current issue, pick one - there's lots. Go buy the bottle the ad tells you to, open it and have a glass. Write a TN and score the wine. Check the review. Does your note compare? If your palate is aligned with a critic's, the ad space purchased is irrelevant, is it not?
Kudos to the WS, Mr. Matthews, Mr. Molesworth, et al. Don't change a thing. Goldstein is a tool. As are many of those who crawled out from underneath their rocks.

2 bottles of wine afterwards never helps comprehension.

davem858 That very well could be the problem with the WS crew to worried about evrything but the wine. Thanks for the comments everyone I rest my case! Ta ta I'm off to to a tasting of wine from the chateauneuf du pape region. Enjoy the WS and those recommendations. Did I spell that correctly?

You know, I never disrespected you. I didn't call you names. I tried to respond to what I assumed was (contained somewhere in your post) a legitimate point - hyperbole aside. And then this is your response. Very sad.

Had to add my edited version of this trainwreck as well. Wait, did he say he hadn't been drinking??

Ironically, your posts have proved you are the one not focused on the wine. And based on your comments I'm guessing you probably aren't really "tasting" anything from the "chateauneuf du pape region" which, last time I checked, isn't actually defined as such.
Most of us here tried to make this about the wine. The one-hit-wonders wanted to make this about journalistic integrity (an oxymoron in my book). WS never mislead anyone about what these ratings were about. Perhaps the uneducated may have been deceived. Frankly I am tired of looking out for the ignorant public. As has been stated here ad nauseum, nobody should be relying solely on these "awards" to determine where they plan on dining. It is merely a starting point. Move the F on already and go to your artificially created "chateauneuf du pape region" tasting.
Given WS's version, it seems apparent that Mr. Goldstein pulled off an elaborate hoax. Was it altruistic in nature wanting to highlight the perceived inadequacies of the WS restaurant wine awards or was it a stunt purely based on self-interest as a means to create a stunt to promote awareness of his book?
Given the fact that only 15 wines of the 200+ submitted were rated poorly by WS, it is quite clear that Mr. Goldstein knowingly and intentionally created a deception for WS ultimately for his own self-interest and there is nothing altruistic or noble about that. It was a fraudulent action on his part.
That being said, his actions do highlight a necessity I believe to review the accuracy and purpose of the WS restaurant wine awards and better scrutinize past, present and future recipients of the award. It is unfortunate that such an incident occurred but hopefully, some constructive change will come of it. It is not the first time that these awards have come under scrutiny on these boards.
