I saw this at Wine Library for $30.99 on sale. Is this a good buy for this wine? I ask because I'm looking to expand my CdP inventory....

TIA-

I paid $35 for the 2000 so as far as I know that is a good price.
I love this Chateau. A good basic CDP.
I have heard of cheaper prices but I would bite at that price.
I hear rumours the price of rhones will jump in 2002.

FWIW,

Chateau La Nerthe is one of the better wineries from the Rhone region. I've been buying their CdP for years. From what I've read, their 2001 vintage is supposed to be very good. However, their wines usually need some aging to reach their peak. The $31 price seems pretty good, so I'd buy.

I have enjoyed this wine for the last three vintages 99, 00, 01 and have kept several for future vertical tastings. It sells for $50+ CDN so you can see that at a mark-up of exchange (1.35), the French contingent here in Canada has decided it is worth ten dollars more (CDN) than you are seeing in the store. I agree....I have paid 50$ CDN for it, and do not mind doing so. Great winter wine.

anyone have experience w/ Guigal CdP? specifically most recent vintages?

i've purchased a couple bottles of 99' & 01', and a few bottles of the La Nerthe 01' CdP. i've never had young CdP's, so any recent vintage CdP i buy i'm sitting on...

i've been told the same thing, that a good Rhone takes time to mature (anywhere from 5-15 years to generalize), though typically not as long as a quality Bordeaux...

In Healdsburg you find the `01 for 47 and the `00 for 40. So I'd jump all over it at 30. Smile

Good price. I've had the 99, 00 (case at $29 a bottle) and the 01 and they are all consistently very good, after long decanting. They do need to cellar for some time.

WS review says to drink this before 2007. Is that accurate?

RRV:

i think PM's windows are too conservative on CNdP. these wines can last, i tend to use parker's windows for southern rhone.

I was recently disappointed with the '98 and decided the southern rhone is not to my taste. My not to my taste list now includes CA pinot noir and CA sauvignon blanc along with southern rhone. I maintain the right to change my mind at any time.

The '01 Guigal is drinking remarkably well right now. I would say the WS rating of 93, and their review is pretty much right on. I've been buying it locally for about $32.00. At this price, it's a steal. Be sure you decant for at least 1 hour before drinking. I have some of the '01 La Nerthe and Beaucastel as well, but I haven't tried them yet.
