My first post, and unfortunately a very stupid question, but I can't find any answers anywhere.
What's the difference between Johannisburg Reisling and Reisling? I find similar fruit in both wines, and wonder whether it's a stylistic label difference or an actual tasting difference. your thoughts? |

I believe the "Johannisberg" part has been removed by edict from the BATF, as it has been deemed some type of proprietary geographical term and can no longer be used by Riesling wines made in the United States. Beginning in the 2001 vintage, Johannisberg will not be on labels of American Riesling any more.
If you are talking about what is the difference between say, Chateau Ste. Michelle Johannisberg Riesling and Kendall-Jackson Riesling, for example, there is NO difference. There may be some clonal difference (winemakers, and growers, care to eleaborate?), but the wine is the same. Hope this helps. |

Welcome, bamajenk.
Your question was far from stupid. And as far as I can recall, had never been asked here before. I'm sure you helped educate numerous folks, including myself. |

Good question, but I question the answer. I have seen 2002s bearing the label "Johannisberg Riesling" right here in Michigan. In fact, Chateau Grand Travers makes two semi dry rieslings, one "Semi-Dry Riesling" and the other "Semi-Dry Johannisberg Riesling." They do not have exactly the same flavor profile - with the J.R. having a bit of pear added to the normal peach/apple/citrus flavor of the Riesling.
