However, that organization isn't always on "our" side. FTG has been either silent on, or actively supportive of, this and similar legislation in other states. They seem to have hung their hat on the distinction between wineries and retailers, and are throwing the retailers under the bus. The same holds true with Wine Institue of CA and Family Winemakers of CA (from Tom Wark post on ebob).

I think that's an unfortunately narrow and anti-consumer stance.
My post is not an endorsement of freethegrapes. The site does show basic shipping practices for individual states.

Re-read the above quote. It is an analogy (though perhaps a poor one) about the California Wine Institutes apparent support of a bill limiting trade in another state, perhaps to gain momentum before they propose such a thing in their own. Not an indictment of Bush or Republicans in general. Just the same strategy.
These things are usually crafted by special committees (or their lobbyists), and I have no idea of the political affiliation of members of said committee.
So reel it in, pardner.

Looks like these wine clubs need to figure out a way to ship to Jersey, or I'll be falling off of quite a few mailing lists once this passes. Bummer!

Looks like I'll just have to drink Bordeaux and Burgandy and local available pinot noir's from now on!

Why not just get an offsite in NYC?

I didn't know that most of the places in Cali could ship to NYC.

Any suggestions on a place you use?

Thanks!

The State Rep from my district owned Mautino's Distributions, (a huge beer distribution for the LaSalle County and surrounding areas.) He sold the alcohol side of his business and soon after that HB 429 was introduced. He's not on that committee that introduced it, but there's something fishy going on down in Springfield. This is absolute garbage.

No worries. Wink
I think all of us here (with a couple notable exceptions) are for a free marketplace where wine is concerned.

Dave you do know that California passed as similar law last year right? The only reason it is not being enforced is that the Specialty Wine Retailers Association sued the state. They have been granted two years to get a different bill passed that would please all parties. Now back to thank god I don't live in that hell hole of California.

Have not used this place but someone recommended www.vintagewinewarehouse.com

Curious - has anyone used them for wine delivery/storage?

It's been 30 days since the bill was sent to the Guv with no signature yet. After 30 more days it will become law.

Double checked online and the bill was signed back in October and goes into effect June 1 2008. Looks like I will be planning a few roadtrips in order to pick up my futures, or maybe the UPS driver can meet me one mile over the Illinois border in Wisconsin for the delivery.

It is my understanding that the new Illinois anti-consumer and anti-shipping law goes into affect June 1st. Has anyone heard anything otherwise?

Have not heard anything otherwise so I have been looking into alternative ways to get the wines I want. Just gonna cost a little bit more. I refuse to give any more business to Sam's or Binny's as a result of this law. Their prices are higher and the selection is not what I am used to online. I think they stand to benefit nicely though.

I expect some litigation before the fall shipping season. Off the record, I've heard some speculation as to how aggressively this will be enforced. It depends on how much pressure the state puts on UPS et al.

Art I believe that Sam's and Binny's were on record that they opposed this law, mainly because both do a healthy online business that they stand to lose as a result. As for prices, I think that Binny's does a nice job, IMO.

Hmmm,
This could be the reason that after at least 10 years ordering from Sam's in Chicago they now refuse to ship to Oklahoma. I know it was illegal, but no harm no foul!!

Will work for wine

Wineries are not affected by the law, only retailers. You can still order from your mailers and have the wine shipped direct. You just can't buy the wine from Wine Library or PC and have it shipped here.

I ship from retailers in the fall also, or at least I used to.

BTW wineries are impinged also: 2 cases per producer per vintage and 12 cases total per vintage IIRC.

I work for one of those stores you listed and I'm 100% against the banning. We are not benefiting from this one bit.

This may save me money! Although, I've joined some mailing lists and a couple clubs.

Most states are already subject to similar laws. It seems the wine buyers in Georgia (other thread) are happy that similar laws were approved. Start visiting your local Costco more often - prices and selection (at least in Chicago) are great. A friend in the wine business says this is great for Costco and places like the Wine Discount Center but not so great for volume seller's like Sam's (less inventory, higher cost/bottle sold, lower sale price/bottle since internet buyers are more discerning). Sounded reasonable to me.
