I'm looking for recommendations on mid-priced ($20-$40) California cab blends. There are a number of wines being made in this range that are very approachable within 1-2 years, e.g. Cain Cuvee and provide a solid alternative to the pure Cabs that need a lot of cellar time to smooth out the tannins. Other suggestions??

Matt Kramer had this on his list of best wines of 2003, and deservedly so.

It is usually $38 to $40 and it is nearly 100% Cab but, based upon 1997 and 1999, I have to say that my hands-down favorite in this category is Hendry Block 8. 1997 Chapallet Signature came somewhat close, but the Hendry easily gets my nod. I can't wait for the 2001.

The 2000 Decoy Migration is a solid wine for around $25. I think this is a 2nd label for Duckhorn.

On the high end of your price point, you usually can not go wrong with the Franciscan Magnificant.

Historically I've liked Estancia Meritage, St.Supery Meritage, Newton Claret, and Treana.

At least those come quickly to mind.

funny wine quip goes here.

I routinely like the Girard and the Clos Du Bois Marlstone. The Girard is usually available at Costco. Also, Swanson Alexis is very good.

Four suggestions not previously mentioned.

Flora Springs Trilogy though it's probably slightly over $40 now. Cronin Concerto if you can find it, about $24. St. Clement Oroppas, very reliable and about $36. BV Tapestry in a good year is generally reliable.

I'll second the St. Clement Orappas, which should retail around $40-$45, got an RP 93 in the December issue and isn't out yet.

The Beringer Alluvium should be very good in 2001 for around $25-$30.

I have also had Helen Cullen's Casaeda, which is very smooth and polished and $30.00

Had the Steltzner Claret $15.00 the other day. Nothing wrong with it but it didn't move me. I prefer the Castle Rock Napa $8.00 to be honest. My friend liked it more than the Castle Rock.

The Simi Cab AV (not meritage) is under $20 and very ready and tasty now.

I bought a case of the 1997 Estancia Duo when it came out for around $24/bottle. I don't know if they're still making this, but this was the first wine that came to mind when I read your post.

I remember the Estancia Duo being a very good QPR, but have not seen it in years.

Newton Claret for $20-22 has been a good choice. It is approachable and has a little backbone, with nice fruit.
