I was bored this Saturday morning so went to the Travel and Entertainment board and saw a thread about songs that were one hit wonders. So that got me thinking... what about wines? Was there one that kind of unexpectedly stood out one year and then kind of disappeared again?
The only one I can think of that might be a one hit wonder is the Chianti Classico Riserva Cellole by San Fabiano Calcinaia that was pretty decent but then scored an "outstanding" 95 by WS for the 2001 vintage and then haven't repeated this accolade since (that I am aware). What others?

I had the 01 Cellole twice and could never figure out how Suckling ever gave it such a high rating. I thought it was a rather simple wine that should have gotten a sub-90 rating. Suckling must have tasted a rogue sample.
Roda is a great modern Spanish producer. But the '95 Roda I is noticably better than any other they have produced.
La Spinetta is a brilliant Barbera producer, but the '99 Gallina is on a seperate playing field than any other I've tasted from them.
Taking price into account, Bernard Levet Le Chavaroche is my favorite Cote Rotie. However, the '03 would give most $200 Cote Roties a run for their money.
I think it is easier for a not-so-talented musician to write a decent song than it is for a not-so-talented winemaker to make a good wine.

Dunno about the scores, but Paloma Merlot has been remakably consistent relative to vintage, imo, since the late '90s. While the '01 was the best, '99, '01, '02, and '04 have all been exactly what I expected given the vintages.

i don't know about one hit, but troplong mondot had a ridiculously great 1990 and really has never duplicated that i have had. I understand the 2005 is very fine.

The Troplong '95 we had was a very impressive wine that was opened way too young. I think it could be amazing in 10+ years.
The Paloma comment is just silly.....
My vote....tough....Clo Mimi??...I'm thinking huge extracted high alc wine...as I think these will be a thing of the past....maybe an Aussie wine I can't think of right now???

Bigsky- when did you drink it? I have a couple of mags of this that I'm wondering about. I last opened one in 2005 and my notes reflect that I thought it needed 5 more years (that would be very soon). Have you had it from 750 recently?
******* Not looking good for next year either.

Depends what you mean by '1-hit'... Beausejour Duffau had a Parker 100 in 1990 and never close to the same level again, but is generally a good wine.
As for wines that were good once and only once... I'm not sure that I know any. Wineries like Shild and Clos Mimi were 'in fashion', but arguably never made good wine...

This wine should truly be hitting it's stride within the next 4-10+ years.

Are you saying you only liked the 2004, and why?
Why do you even bother, w+a? Your question is still reverberating off the cavernous walls.
