I popped the screwcap of and took a slurp. It was slightly fizzy and tasted like dirt and i don't mean in a good way. It's now 3 days after i opened the bottle and i'm drinking the last glass. It tastes alot better now and i didn't die or get sick so i guess it wasn't a bad bottle.Does this sound like like a bad bottle? Is is safe to assume that any wine with a screwcap is ready to drink now?

The screw cap revolution took place in Oz when Clare Valley riesling producers en masse put their rieslings under stelvin caps. Clare Valley rieslings are serious aging wines, and in good vintages like 2002 can last for 30 years.
Debate still rages about whether reds are suitable for long term aging under screw cap. Some producers down here are putting their money where their mouth is and putting long tern reds under screw cap. I've come across some residual fizziness in a number of screw cap bottled wines. I'm not sure the cause of it, but giving the wine a bit of aeration makes it go away. It was my Uncle George who discovered that alcohol was a food well in advance of modern medical thought. - P. G.
