It's bad news for vineyard crews. At least for people who do green thinning and suckering. Means they are working in the heat right now.
My guys haven't complained yet, but I'm letting them stop at 3PM each day. It's been a wierd year so far. Almost no mildew pressure all year because it's been so cold, then we get a couple days of heat and the index starts to climb, then it gets really hot and the index falls again. For people who had frost damage this is probably good, it will get their plants going finally pushing new shoots. I'll be in St Helena tomorrow for Insignia Day. Was going to make a day of it, but now just thinking about attending the event only due to the heat (starts at 4pm).
Rode my bike 30 miles this morning for Ride to Work Day when it was only 85 degrees... |

I work out of the house. Rode with my girlfriend to her job, then turned around and rode back home.
I thought I had it bad until she rode home in the peak of the heat. |

That's insane. Is it normally hot this time of year? I am in NC and it hasn't been anywhere close to that hot. Our temps are going to be similar to what wine + art posted, but little cooler.
At least it's a dry heat (just kidding). |

Ugh. I hate August. Last year was unbelievably terrible. We had the highest number of 90+ days in history and it did not subside until late October. Awful. |

No, these temps aren't normal for this time of year, these are close to records. San Francisco averages 65 for May, while the area I'm in averages 78. |

Dave - 3-5 is the hottest time of the day. 11-1 isn't bad usually.
They are in Corrolitos today at the Woodruff Family Vineyard, pulling up wire. A low stress job and right along the coast. They'll take the weekend off (I'm working Sunday) and we'll finish up suckering on the East side next week when it's cooler. The only thing I have flowering right now is the Haut Tubee Vineyard. Bad timing, I need to tie up the vines tomorrow morning for the party tomorrow night, and that will probably drop my yield 20-30%. Seems to me that we always have a mini heat wave for a few days every May, usually at the end of the month.
