Hi,

I fall into the camp that it is difficult to have too much. A reasonable solution to the cost/foam problem is to buy the spray foam insulation in the disposable packs - it can be as low as $1 a board foot. (Tiger foam is one of the brands I used) Then buy the 1 or 2 inch or more thick foam insulation boards (r7 per inch) - roughly cut the foam boards to fit the stud cavities and have enough to fill 50-80% (thickness) of cavity. (I would use 2x6s as well). Now, at this point you will need some help. A wine buddy for sure. Completely cover the cavity with a thin coat of spray foam - have your helper quickly insert the cut foam board into the cavity and press it firmly to bond with the back of the wall/vapor barrier/spray foam for a good seal. Just go around the cellar with this process. You can do multiple levels and get close to r40 or more if you use R-foil or similar for the vapor barrier. This will be greatly cheaper than just slow rise or spray insulation with the same benefit. It will also act as a secondary vapor barrier if you didn't seal particularly well.”

Im in the process of building my wine cellar (the contractor is framing today and electrician coming tomorrow). im using 2x6's and was initially going to use tiger foam to fill in so that i get my vapor barrier and R-value in one. now i see that vino-ripper did both (spray in foam plus foam board). this would seem to be a more cost effective method (as tiger foam relatively expensive).

my question is (an if vino-ripper see's this, he would be the best one to answer): 1) do you spray in the tiger foam, press in the board then spray over the board again with the tiger foam?
2) what foam board do you speak of?

Lastly, after reading all the horror stories about coolers, its seems breezaire may be the best of the worst.

Just saw this - probably too late.

YES.

Home Depot or Lowes will several brands or types. Just compare r value and price. Thicker probably better. you don't need the foil lined since you are using the spray foam.

Coolers - I use a whispercool - no problems, but it is louder than a whisper.

email me at davegott at bellsouth dot net if i can help further.
