I definitely need to get some stems. I primarily drink reds...mostly cabs, some rhones, some pinot...

Anybody know of a good place to start, value-wise? I don't need the absolute best-of-the-best, but don't want garbage, either.

I'm thinking either 4 or 8 stems.

Thanks in advance...

Dave's suggestion is good - you can also look for Spiegleau specials

Finally, you really can get perfectly decent stems from Crate & Barrel - greatest ever, no but we bought 15 giant pinot tulip glasses from there probably 7-8 years ago - and still have 11 or 12 and got them on close out for something like $3-4 a stem. Used them for many offlines and none of the wine-os have ever complained

Danny, I'd go for the Lenox Tuscany Series stems. They're virtual clones of the Riedel Somms at a fraction of the cost. You can find them on sale in Macy's for $10 a stem.

Just one more sip.

Do NOT drink pinot in anything but a pinot glass. Cabernets "can work" in a pinot glass but not the other way around. (in my opinion)

Danny, James Laube wrote his July 10th blog about this exact subject. He said his go to one glass for everything was the Triton Burgundy Forte Model, about $9.

You're welcome for doing the research that you should have done. Razz

I own the Grand Bordeaux, Grand Beaujolais and Champagne flutes and am very happy with all. Affordable, very effective and difficult to break (only one broken so far in 2+ years).

I was at a wine show recently and they were selling Ravenscroft bordeaux stems for $3 lead free crystal. I picked a bunch and they work nicely.

The correct spelling is Tritan. If you do an internet search, this will help.

Thank you guys for your input thus far. I may just grab a set from K&L and a set from Macy's since they're so reasonable. I really appreciate the response...

You need more than 4 stems. I'd but 12. Really, I'd buy 20, but I entertain a lot. so, if I were you I would find one that you like (or is on sale, a la our tulip glasses) and buy 10-12 of them. That way, when they break you still have plenty!

I seem to have gone thru almost all of mine. However, I only remember breaking 1 or 2...maybe time to fire that maid/wife...

Perhaps an odd suggestion:
IKEA 365+ 'Ivrig' glass. Its sold for $2.99. They are great glasses for classic nebbiolo, pinot noir and sangiovese. They do show serious production tolerances. But most IKEA outlets have a huge stock, so you can select them easily. Choose the ones with the sharpest top edge and 'flattest' botom part of the glass (sorry for my bad english).

I use them now for several years at tastings at my house. And I'm very satisfied with them.

I really liked World Market's Connoisseur line. It is made in Germany and they have glasses for CS, PN, C, Port, etc... very good quality and great price...
