Blah Blah BLah BLah... But please do not accuse me of being on the Parker payroll. I at least have a palate, or I like to think that I do.

You can downplay the Top 100 List from now until hell freezes over. The truth is, lots of people LOVE Top 100 Lists. If that wasn't true, this thread would not have garnered over 3300 views this quickly and that issue of Wine Spectator would not be the top selling issue of the year.

Fair enough Ballymote. It's also true that most people are idiots. Smile

Indybob, I'm not sure the definitions you posted are particularly supportive of your apparent position that anything written in a magazine = journalism. Maybe this is the one you were looking for: http://dictionary.reference.co...e/yellow+journalism?

Hey when I was a novice I loved trying to find QPR's from the top 100 list...

...that said, I would basically never do that these days. To each their own..

Could a low priced/high rated wine like the Columbia Crest, and a slow US economy give birth to an "it" factor?

I didn't read through all the posts, but here is my 2¢ on consumer vs. retailer.

Most of the wines on the WS Top 100 list are already available for purchase at a retailer near you. The chances are some of them has been sitting on the shelf collecting some dusts.

If dumb ass Joe sees a wine at 95 points for $70 and passed but now see it on the Top 100 list and wants to buy, he deserves to get raped and pay $100 for what was a $70 wine.

Its all supply and demand and people wanting to own a so called top 10 wine of the year. Increased demand will increase the price as always.

Powell Yang is not talking about--WIML Joe, because we all know WIML Joe has never passed on a $70 bottle, or a $100 bottle! Big Grin

Especially if it's a Bordeaux that tastes very citrusy, or a Burg that has a slight red rooster aftertaste.

Before the Top 100 is made public (on Monday 11/16 for members of WineSpectator.com, followed by a free countdown beginning on Wednesday 11/18), I would like to remind folks that what drives our selection of the wines for this list is passion.

These are the wines that really got us excited in 2009. Because they embodied a great vintage, or signaled the arrival of a worthy new region or producer. These wines earned their places through blind tastings, in the first place, and then for their value and significance as we reviewed the 17,000 wines we tasted in 2009. The selections are made by the editors, not the business side, and commercial considerations play no role in our deliberations.

We think these wines are special. We hope you agree, but the most important thing is to fuel a conversation about what makes wines special, and which wines got people excited this year. We look forward to your responses when we unveil the list next week.

This DA Joe would be happy to take anyone's allocation of Clos des Papes off their hands... Shut out of 05&07.

I'm just wondering what will be this year's "Schild" - the wine that people thought would make the cut, but didn't.

I'm betting that I've got just two of the top 100 - Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc and Royal Tokaj 5 putts.

I always thought the "Schild" reference implied the wine that should not have made the list..or at least as high as it did... are you suggesting it refers to the wine that didn't make it the next year ??

Other way around. With the score, price and case production the Schild looked to be guaranteed a top 10 position, if not #1. But it was so utterly lacking in any excitement factor that it missed the top 100 entirely.

There's always wines that either don't make the list or were expected to be higher on it.
