Actually this year the agent that brings Flacc into the province decided not to sell any to the LCBO, instead they sold directly to consumers (though they had to do so at the LCBO-set price, and agents are only allowed to sell by the case to consumers (6 bottles for the flacc))...i was too late to the game so it was either buy in the US or get in the back of the line on the waiting list.

Mareff - When I was a child growing up in Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, there was a kid named Mark who would throw sticks at us, and then run into his apartment. Saying other peoples guesses are absurd, and then continuing to not indicate your picks, reminded me of that. The wines I have suggested that may be among the Top 10 are all excellent wines, and show value for the quality. As I had indicated, two of them are longshots due to low production, but the others have a decent shot. As to the Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc at 96 pts, $29, just watch -- it's got a good shot at being among the TOP 5! So I challenge you to come into the pool with us by telling us YOUR best guesses for a bunch of wines that you think might make the TOP 10 -- you won't drown, as the water is only three feet deep -- you might even like it. I'll even make you a promise: I challenge you to make your guesses, and if yours turn out more accurate than mine, I'll post that admission in all cap letters on this Forum. However, if mine are better, I promise I'll keep silent, and not a word will be said! Even with this said, I still think you're going to throw another stick, and run back into your apartment.

Point is that it will be for WS.com Subscribers only. Many folks
may not be on the net and will look at the list when published in hard copy. Thus between 11/16 and issue date, these prices will have been raised.

No WS doesn't make prices move, retailers do.

Sorry that you took it wrong. Delay in data dissemination to now .com folks, will hurt them, not us. Many folks are point or list chasers.

Actually winesteve, I do not throw sticks, I throw rocks, they do more damage.

brahahaaahahhhhhhhhhhhaaa

As far as making a prediction: I will say this, the list is merely a marketing gimmick whose whole purpose is to inflate a market and sell more wine. With that being said, I was just like you about three or four years ago. But I matured, now I only seek out the #7, 8, 9, and 10 wines of the year instead of 1, 2, and 3.

Yes, mareff, I clearly see how you have matured. Exactly as I predicted, you indeed threw another stick (rock), and did not have the courage to offer your picks, even though many of us have. I've got you pegged to a tee!!!!

I fundamentally disagree. The whole purpose is to sell magazines and raise awareness for the Wine Spectator brand. I think they do The List because readers like to read and analyze The List. It's no different than the annual restaurant best-of issue your local newspaper might do; or the round up of the best doctors and health spas the local monthly magazine could write about.

Journalism, no matter how fluffy and lightweight it might be, is not advertising- - -at least not for anything other than the publisher's product.

funny, because you know nothing about me. But I will let you have your little fun in the sun and let you think that you can predict people's attitude and behavior just like you do with respect to wine lists.

Double D, lets start it..

Winesteven, based upon your observations you missed the obvious....Bordeaux. Where is that in your top ten.

Now if WS wants to throw a curve ball and list no bordeaux for the top ten then fantastic. Merry Edwards, they will be lucky to crack the top 20.

I forsee a fantastic Rhone for the top 10 maybe 8, 9 or 10 from the 2007 vintage. Probably a wine from Argentina breaking the top 10 or maybe from Chile. But I cannot give you specific wine names, I leave that for the pros of which neither you nor I are!

If you can't give your picks or specific names it's going to be tough to "start it", or even get into it for that matter, like you said you wanted to do.

Thank you, Icewino. However, no prodding will get mareff to "come out" and share his guesses. Monday morning quarterback type.

well actually, I did make some predictions, but since I did not play by winesteven's rules I failed to inform the forum world specific wine names.
I guess that I will be more careful inthe future when dealing with winesteven's threads.

I did not realize that he is a perfectionist!

Don't worry, MWN. There will be a dozen of these running around by the time the list is released.

I won't lose sleep over it - I just think the thread bickering should be left to Board-O and Icewino in the baseball threads. Razz

Can I bicker here too? Wink Umm, they were DoubleD's rules, that you asked him to make. To just list regions with great recent vintages isn't really what the top 100 is about. I'll be happy to get in the pool if there's interest, with names and all.

You mentioned Bordeaux like it's a foregone conclusion that there will be one in the top 10? The recent 2006 vintage had some wines that could make it (Leoville Barton for one) but considering the relatively poor vintage it's far from a lock that there will be one in there and I don't believe the 05's qualify.

As for the actual top 100 I enjoy the issue, although like most I don't buy much based on it but occasionally I will see something I missed and would like to pick up. I certainly enjoy it more than the cooking and chef issues they put out, all to often IMO.

I share many sentiments. It is fun to read but I never go back and buy unless it is something I usually buy and I go "Oh crap" these are going to sell fast.

In terms of what wines, I think you guys nailed it. I think you will see some of the Top 2007 Pinots, 2007 CdP, there have to be some 2006 Cali Cabs (given some of Laubes scores), and I think some late released Bordeaux 2005, Burgundy 2005, etc. You will always see a sweet wine in there and at least a couple whites (I think the Merry Edwards is as good as guess as any). Also, expect the usual Pio Cesare wine or another top Tuscan.

And finally, I want to tread carefuly on this - the wine of the year ABSOLUTELY will be one - that goes to all, if not many of the WS Tour/Experience events and participate in the tastings. Not sure what it will be but I would put money on the fact it or a wine from the Winery that was just poured at the NY wine Experience. And honestly, I cannot blame WS for that (You scratch my back, I will scratch yours).

I see plenty of puerile comments from those that think this thread isn't worthy... but not many wish to opine as to what will be the # 1 WOTY ? My guess is a 2007 CNDP: Chateau Beaucastel
