How much (if any) do you mark up wine if you are selling? Not to close friends. I am getting some wines that are not in the BCLDB - or available through wine shops and some people from work want in on them. My cost approx $60-$90 per bottle. This will probably come up more often in the future. Or another example, if I buy by the case from wineries that then sell out. Any advice?

Me, personally, I sell at cost to people I consider friends.

If I was splitting an order with someone then I'd sell at cost.
I've never sold something to a friend from my cellar that was currently trading for significantly more than I paid for it; I've only sold those at auction or traded for other wines at the market rate. http://scmwine.wikispaces.com http://scmwine.blogspot.com http://blogs.sun.com/davetong http://twitter.com/davetong |

Current purchases of readily available wine. Cost plus expenses.
Current purchase of cult/rare wine. Depends on the friend. Best case, cost. Aquaintances, low winesearcher retail from reputable merchant. PH |

Never sold any of my wine... but I'd sell at cost plus shipping expenses (as PH said) to friends; unless (just like Dave) the wine was selling for a significnt profit, in which case I'd auction it.

I'm not a retailer, so maybe this question isn't meant for me.
I've never sold wine to friends, but I've given them plenty, and they have likewise reciprocated. It all works out in the end. *********** You never see crazy people walking the streets, screaming about atheism, do you? |

Cost plus expense it is. Just to clarify, these are not going to close friends. Co-workers, etc. They usually get me to make their wine purchases for them. Even though I am a novice, they are even more so. I can't get one of them to stop pronouncing Pinot Noir as peanut norr
Thanks for your help. |

If you follow your instincts, you will come to the right decision (awfully sanctimonious, isn't it?). If the government liquor authority can triple or quadruple the price (in your best interest, mind you), there's no reason why you shouldn't be equally public-spirited. Just consider it your duty to help them cut down on their alcoholism.
As for the guy who says "peanut norr", my instinct would be to really whack him good! |

There's no gracious way to suggest it to them, but if the recipients of your efforts have a bit of class, they would buy you a gift once in a while to show their appreciation for the trouble you go through on their behalf. I didn't reply earlier because I think your inquiry can only be answered by yourself-- everybody's different in that regard-- but I bought a case of the same wine ('04 Oliverhill) to split with Tyee. He is a friend, so of course we just split the cost down the middle, but even if he were only an acquaintance, I wouldn't feel comfortable making money on it. That doesn't mean others shouldn't; as I wrote, I think everyone should make their own decision on this issue. On the other hand, any time he annoys me more than usual, Tyee's cost goes up between 10 - 40%. ___________________________ Cheers! |

Not sure if you saw my other post re: Ken Wright, but I am going to order a case or 2, are you interested in splitting an order? |

On release and for friends? Cost. I may drive around for a couple of hours buying wines, but they do the same for me.
After a few years on a wine that has appreciated substantially? I wouldn't feel right about selling to a friend at a profit, so I would try to swing a FMV to FMV trade. Alternatively, auctions would likely be where I would turn if I wanted to move unneeded, expensive bottles. "There's no substitute for pulling corks" Alexis Lichine |

What do you have for sale? |

What a coincidence you responded. My original reply was going to have been, "Another vote for cost. Unless it's preferred, then 2x cost."

For stuff that's been cellared for years I'd firstly try to swing a trade, but if not I'd work out current market value and take 10-20% off. It was my Uncle George who discovered that alcohol was a food well in advance of modern medical thought. - P. G. Wodehouse |

I also like to trade older wines with friends, rather than mark up the price of the wine.
I split lots of allocations with friends (and some just acquaintances) always at cost. I look at it this way, when I come over, I know what they have in their wine storage areas, so I look forward to them popping known good wines... |
