The Wall Street Journal wine writers John Brecher & Dorothy Gaiter were on NPR news this afternoon. It seems its the 8th annual "A Time to Uncork Weekend" this Saturday.

The idea is this: Whether you are an avid wine drinker or not most people have that "special bottle" that is being reserved for that most special of occasions. Problem is - we never bring ourselves to uncork the bottle! Seems the time is never right. Maybe its a bottle from a special trip to a winery or maybe the bottle belonged to a departed loved one.

The "A Time to Uncork Weekend" is a weekend to open that special bottle. To not really celebrate an occasion but to maybe relive that special trip through Napa or Tuscany or to celebrate the life of a long since departed loved one.

Do any of you have such a bottle?

I track my 300+ bottles on an excel spreadsheet that I refer to daily. I realized today that my most coveted bottle isnt on any of my inventory reports. It was a gift to my parents by my grandfather who passed away five years ago. We have had many occasions to open it but we just never seem to get around to it - the bottle has been in the family for over 20 years now!

I think this weekend I will get everyone together and uncork that bottle. Share some bubbly and some memories of my nonno.

Salute.
Ad fundum!

I noticed a similar thing, in that waiting for the "right" occaision to open a bottle generally means that the bottle will never be opened. You don't want to open a special bottle for people who won't appreciate it, and a general special occaission, like a wedding, birthday etc. means inviting people who are dear to you, but wouldn't know Lafite from Yellowtail.

Now, when I have a special bottle that must be consumed I create a reason, and invite over people who will appreciate the bottle.

Its funny you say that. We try and uncork good bottles for special occasions and holidays, but we do have a few that are ready, that on Valentines Day, I said "well maybe", but it never happens. Maybe Saturday is the night.

Good idea, L4MG2K. Not that I have too many special bottles (especially those that are ready to drink)... but I'm sure I could find something. Enjoy your nonno's wine!! Smile

An excellent idea, but we're having an offline Saturday at which mucho fino vino will be uncorked, Maybe next weekend though, just for the hell of it.
