in my perpetual pursuit to master all things Sta Rita Hills, in addition to a busy personal/work/school life, i realized this morning its been probably 6-9 months since ive had a bottle of Champagne and the one i had was cellared for a long time...

what good Champagnes have you all been buying recently? anything stand out? are the perpetual NV QPR's from Piper, Bollinger, Duval Leroy... and the like still kicking strong?

look forward to the comments

How embarrassing for you. Big Grin

I haven't been buying any lately. Our prices here in Texas are some of the worst in the land. Shortly the shipping window will open up and I'll restock.

Drinking it's been mostly NV lately. Here's a list:

N.V. Gaston Chiquet Champagne Blanc de Blancs d'Aÿ
N.V. Krug Champagne Grande Cuvée Brut
N.V. Jean Laurent Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut
N.V. Jean Laurent Champagne Brut Rosé
N.V. A. Margaine Champagne Demi Sec
N.V. Michel Arnould & Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut Réserve
N.V. Pierre Peters Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Cuvée de Réserve
N.V. Philipponnat Champagne Réserve Rosée
N.V. Michel Turgy Champagne Réserve Selection Brut Blanc de Blanc
1988 Pol Roger Champagne Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill Brut
1988 Salon Champagne Brut Blanc de Blancs
1995 Jacquesson & Fils Champagne Signature Extra Brut

The Gaston Chiquet is a stand out in my mind. The Jean Laurents are a little towards pedestrian but with some searching are darn good on the QPR scale. The Turgy and Arnould are also quite good.

IMO Krug is such a freak of champagne nature; so unlike any other champagne I've had. Here is the sacrilege....I'm not sure that I like the NV.

I'll take my verbal beating now.

replace Krug in the above sentence with "Salon" for me

ive had way more bottles of the "old label" Krug NV (i think they changed, maybe 3-4 years ago?) versus the "new label" and while there were differences, i love them both

this thread has me thinking back to the Duval Leroy Femme, believe it was the 96', that Seaquam opened for Dunder, my sister, and myself last year (has it been that long!)... amazing... one of my most singular Champagne experiences. i may need to procure a split of that along with some choice pate Cool

One of my Top 10 of all-time.

It was indeed a stunning bottle the night we enjoyed it, along with the other stunning bottles. Smile

Since the question was on purchases lately, not sure if this one is good but worth a try at this price. 1989 J Lassalle Magnum Blanc de Blanc at $69.

Agree that Jean Laurent's NVs can be a great QPR. The Rose can be a bit variable, the BdN a bit meaty (which some don't like), but the BdB is also crisp and precise - amazing for the Aube since they aren't "supposed" to do Chardonnay well there.

A couple of thoughts on well priced and easier to find Champagnes that pop to mind are Duval-Leroy's Blanc de Chardonnay (in any vintage). It can be a bit 1-D, but it is almost always great for shorter term cellaring/drinking. My other choice would be Charles Heidsieck's Brut Reserve (with or without the Mis en Cave designation). Just a great wine full of vanilla and fruit. Year after year a great wine for a low price.

TheEngineer,

thanks for the reco, will look into it!

Brad,

good to know about Charles & D-L. they were some of my go to QPR's a few years back, as well as Piper Heidsieck & Veuve yellow label (not so much anymore)

Just had this at a trade tasting, and it was impressive.

Absolutely! This wine is still priced under $40 in our market. Always have the Heidsieck Reserve on hand.

NV Billiot - I love the rich pinot fruit in this champagne. Nice effervescent long finish. It really ticks all the boxes for me.
98 Joseph Perrier Cuvee Josephine
NV Vilmart Grand Reserve
03 Vilmart Cellier d'Or
00 Bollinger Grand Annee

I had my first split, 500ml of the 96 Femme a month ago. A ran out and bought every bottle I could find after that which was 6 more. Stunning!

For some odd reason, I thought we were talking QPR Champagnes.

Selosse is so very special, yet not for everyone in my opinion.

Leaves more for us! Cool

Here is a link to some notes taken early this year. Near the bottom are winetarelli's notes that I think are mostly spot-on with my palate, especially the La Femme. Wonderful wine. Wonderful evening.

Agree on the Duval-Leroy, good QPR.

Diebolt, Lanson, Drappier also comes to mind for good wines without paying too much.

On the higher side, as already mentioned you can not go wrong with Selosse and you should try any of Cedric Bouchard champagnes.

Indeed. Selosse is the antithesis of QPR. Razz

I also have some Bouchard champagnes and 1999 Philipponnat Champagne Brut Clos des Goisses on the way but haven't tried them so I can't recommend them. Not much QPR there either. Smile

1996 A. R. Lenoble Blanc de Blancs

Opened this last evening and paired with oysters on the half-shell.
Not a complex wine but a very nice showing, and QPR.

nice! not quite on the same level, but i had a split of NV Piper and some oysters yesterday afternoon Cool

started off with some Phantom Creek & Komo Gway varities from BC, finished with a few from the east coast; Conway Cup & Island Creek... the Conway's and Phantom's were phenomenal!
