When I buy on futures it's usually 3 to six bottles at a time and I buy mixed cases. When I buy locally its usually 2 bottles at a time. My cellar is about 50/50 betwen futures and local so I'd say around 3 or 4 bottles per.

I'd have expected higher. Some bottles are many, but I suppose several single bottle purchases bring down the count pretty effectively. Interesting.

What if all you collect is Imperial's?? 8 wines in a bottle...

Myself, I'm still buying single bottles for most everything except Bordeaux.

So that tells me you have 229 different wines and 730 total bottles, or some multiple thereof. You should be careful about telling this board too much. Wink

Or you could just look me up on cellartracker Wink

I thought there was a place on cellartracker that already calculated this until I realized all I had to do was divide the total number of bottles I had by the numer of different kinds of wine I had. Red Face

Well, I have to account for all the bottles that I wish I had in my cellar. That will definitely lower the average to around .000001

Actually a depressing exercise. I have way to many 1's. I think it is a combination of 1) I am still figuring out what I like and don't buy multiples until I am sure 2) my palate continuously changes so I dont like buying too much of one thing 3) I always look for multipels to drink first..when I have one left I think harder about drinking it 4)I cant afford to buy as much wine as I would like so I sacrifice quantity for quality and buy less

Precisely.

Officially, 1.5.

When I buy for the cellar I buy at least two, and try to buy 3 so that I can see how the wine evolves. I have stopped buying one bottle of any wine I put into the cellar. It stinks when you taste a great wine, and then it's your only bottle. Additionally, it's hard to drink a wine that is a singular holding. Too much pressure on timing of when to open. I like to have three bottles. On for now, and two for later. If I really like a wine now, or see potential in it, I will get another so that I have 3 in cellar and one in the tummy.

Sounds about right since I normally buy in 3s.

My exact dilemma. Although I am also rather new to collecting.

2.35, but I think that it is going up. I used to be 2 of each if I thought I was going to cellar it/them, but then discovered that if I really enjoyed the 'taster' first one, that I was reluctant to drink the second as I did not want to drink "the last bottle". Flawed thinking in so many ways, but there it is. So, now I try and buy three so that that i can still do the 'taster' but then know that I have 2 left, which somehow, in my psychological world, allows me to feel better.
