So, I've purchased my first few double mags.

These are 04 cali reds but I've read from previous posters that because the corks are hand cut, one has to worry about leakage.

Is that common? Should I wax the top?

I'm going to stick it in offsite storage too, so I have no control about standing it up or not.

I aim to keep this 20 years.

I have and have had many large formats from France and the U.S, including a bunch of double mags and several Imperials. I've never had a problem with a cork in any of them.

Just one more sip.

I have about 10 double mags, and have never had any problem with the corks, except the bottles with waxed corks! They are a pain to deal with when opening, and that is especially true for larger bottles. So, my suggestion is, do not try to improve on your seal; you would probably just make it more difficult to deal with later!

I have waxed one bottle, and I'll never, I said never, do that again! Red Face

I have two 6L bottles, one with wax from 1985 and another without wax from 1991. The one with wax is still perfectly fine, the one without wax leaked. I just discovered the leak earlier this year. A couple years ago it was fine, and has been in constant temps the whole time. Now I have the bottle standing up until I decide to pop it....which I'm sure will be soon.

I would open that leaker at your earliest convenience. To delay is to court disaster. Good luck with it.

Just one more sip.

Nice ones G-man
Gigabit -what would you consider old for getting one of these 04 large formats? Would 50 be old (figuring you would be 70 when you drank it?) How about 60?

My comment to g-man was certainly a bit frivolous in nature. However, I have given this some thought recently. I will turn 40 this year - relatively young - and I have wondered at what age I will stop buying young vintages with good-great ageing potential.

If your child enjoys wine as much as you, there should never be an age to stop buying is how I feel.

Being a port lover, where the drinking window usually doesn't come in till 20 years, I could imagine myself at 50 still buying those young vintages anyway.

If it doesn't break the bank, why not buy?

btw I'm 29, and would probably open these on my 50th.

g-man-

I hope that my children will enjoy wine as much as I do. We have a 2 year-old and one on the way later this summer.

I am being selfish in that I do not want to share the wine with my children. I want to drink it and, perhaps, give them a sip or two. Big Grin
