The next WA is now out. And, with it...yet another "vintage of a lifetime". This time...it's Rhone, and the 2007's. He has declared:
"Tasting the 2007s out of bottle has confirmed my thoughts – this is a truly historic and profoundly great vintage. As the following tasting notes and commentary suggest, this may be the most compelling vintage of any viticultural region I have ever tasted."
The Rhone has seen an amazing run of great years from 1998-now, barring 2002.
So...we're in an economic downturn. We have another "declared" vintage of the century amidst other phenomenal years with phenomenal wines.
Where does the Rhone wine market go from here? No longer a value because prices are headed up up up!, or most people won't care too much since there's already a plethera of great Rhone wines?

I don' know what to make of it. There are so many superlatives in his report/scores. I feel like I need to balance that with Molesworth (whom I trust a lot) and Raynolds. I bought a lot of '07s. I am sure that I will like the wines, but not to the level of Parker. It will be interesting to see what happens. A part of me can't help but feel that a lot of my favorite producers just won WOTY and that the price increases are coming. Sort of sucks, but what are you going to do?

Which ones? I am a print subscriber and have not received my copy.
This won't help pricing one bit. But like with other regions, when prices get out of hand it is time for me to move on to something else. I am glad that I have already purchased some of the 07s.
I have mixed feelings. The "vintage of the century" or "vintage of a lifetime" thing is beginning to seem like the boy who cried wolf. On the other hand, the Rhone is Parker's first love and I have agreed with his assessment on many wines from recent vintages, so I am definitely listening.....
---------- "Sometimes when I reflect back on all the wine I drink I feel shame. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes and dreams . If I didn't drink this wine, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, 'It is better that I drink this wine and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."

I wonder how many people bought cases of 2007 without even trying 2 wines from this vintage. I don't trust Parker palate anymore and that he rates a vintage 100pt scares me more than anything. It is just telling me that those CdP deluxe cuvees became concentrated fruit bombs which have nothing to do with classic CdP. Thanks Bob.

This too is what I fear (maybe now enjoy, as it shifts the focus away from what I like!). What Parker considers 100pt, "perfect CDP", is quite often, nearly undrinkable for me.

Oddly enough, before reading the edition... I opened a syrah...the 2006 Antiqv2s from the SL Highlands. I bought this purely because it was around $39, and Parker gave it 95 pts.
I ended up using it to braise the lamb shanks I made for tomorrow night. It was too ripe, overly sweet, showing noticeable VA, lacking acidity, and undrinkable for me. Perfect for the lamb!

I don't have a lot of experience with S. Rhone, so I can't say whether my palate aligns with Parker's as to that region. I've never had any of the wines that scored 100, not heard of some of those particular bottlings, and they are probably all out of my price range. Parker declaring 2007 vintage of a lifetime or whatever probably just means that I'll have few 2007s in my cellar and more from other vintages that get forgotten because of this recent declaration. Given Parker's seemingly changing palatte that might not be a bad thing.

There are some amazing deals on the '06s right now and these scores will drive down prices further. I have gone back and loaded up. I have seen Vieux Donjon and Domaine Charvin as low as $29.99, Beaucastel and Pegau at $49.99, Saint Prefert Favier at $39.99, and the list goes on.

Yeah, but that stuff scored 95 or less. It's crap!

That's what I'm talking about. I'm done chasing the vintage of the centuries. Guess I'm doomed to drink sub-95 pointers for the rest of my life. Well I can live with it and I know my wallet can.

A few of those up wines I mentioned got 95 points. Charvin got 94, Vieux Donjon was 93. Clearly swill.
