Interesting that an article in the LA Times today does not list Winespectator.com among the top 20 wine oriented sites.

I consistently get the idea that the LA Times and other writers and reporters turn up their nose at The Wine Spectator. Whether it's because they think it's too simplistic or too influential, they seem to try to either ignore it or criticize it at every turn.
Here's the article, to save you having to register: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-wine22feb22,...ll=la-headlines-food WINE & SPIRITS Swirl, sniff, sip, search and blog In the glut of wine websites, there's the snooty, serious and silly. Here's a guide to the best of them. By Patrick Comiskey Special to The Times February 22, 2006 LET'S say that last night you had a fantastic Italian wine with your dinner at Il Grano, and you want to find out more about it. So you boot up the computer and open the Web portal and find the paper napkin you wrote the name on (never mind that Il Grano doesn't use paper napkins — this is an Internet fantasy). Just for kicks you first Google the word "wine" — and come back with about 150 million hits. Curious, you type in beer: fewer than half that many. Whiskey: one-tenth. Coffee comes close, and only water has more. You don't have to like WS. But to not list their site in the top 20 wine related websites is just stupid. I wonder what their problem is with WS?

No Wine Spectator.
No VinoCellar. No WinoDepot. No Langton's. I realise it's a retail site but I believe their vintage reports and guides are pretty definitive for Australia. No Penfold's. Surely the Rewards Of Patience deserves a mention? Every big winery should copy that. No Decanter. Well if you're not going to mention WS I suppose it's only fair.
Oh for crying out loud. And four (coun't em) blogs. http://scmwine.wikispaces.com http://scmwine.blogspot.com http://blogs.sun.com/davetong http://twitter.com/davetong |

TORB did a much better job when he reviewed the wine BBs. Not only did he actually cover the major players his writing style made it a fun and enjoyable read.
TORB's site is one that in my view should have made the cut, even if some people consider it 'just a blog'. Another oz-centric site that is worthy of consideration is the auswine forum. What would you expect from someone who could write (about Jancis Robinson):
"Her breadth of knowledge is so vast she edited an encyclopedia to contain it, the 850-page "Oxford Companion to Wine," the most dogeared wine reference book on my shelf." ___________________________________________________ It's good to try them young too and then let them age - James Suckling Infanticide can be very satisfying - Robert Parker I drink mine young to avoid disappointments - James Laube |

I had to go check it out. It's a classic all right. The mods locked it so it can't be bumped, but it's still here http://scmwine.wikispaces.com http://scmwine.blogspot.com http://blogs.sun.com/davetong http://twitter.com/davetong |

LA Times has taken a beating on Parker offline. Did they at least mention Parker offline on the pole?

I just read the Emperor of Wine. I don't remember any mention of sexual peccadilloes. "When I drink, I think; and when I think, I drink." Francois Rabelais www.tanglenet.com TN posted on Cellartracker |

Not to worry, Serge bought Ben ( along with Ben's other very cool pet tracking site I hope) and they are all part of another great wine site now. All happy, chillin' under one brand spamking new roof. |
