One of the first messages received on the island of Madeira when they just had gotten their first telegraph connection was Board-O telling a local wine enthusiast that he was drinking his 18th century Madeira a century too soon, and that he was better off to go sailing with it rather than drink it.

Actually, I bought the 1959 Haut Batailley and 1953 Lascombes that were bottled by Cockburn in Edinburgh. I bought them in 1979 or 1980 and didn't even realize I was buying non-estate-bottled wine. They turned out to be 2 of the greatest wines I've ever tasted.

Alexis Lichine had purchased Lascombes in 1953 and sold off a number of barrels to Cockburn, I'm guessing in an effort to raise money. I wish I had more of it now. It was far better than the disappointing 1953 Latour.
