Let's look at the 1995 Angelus---95 parker points and it's Futures price was $55.

Yet you feel like you got a bargain on the 2000 Angelus by paying $150, and parker rated it 96!

That makes 2001 Switchback Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, rated 97 points and sells for $72.00, look like a bargain!

Chateaux and/or Negociants are taking advantage of your eagerness to acquire wines. They manage the releases and keep the price propped! Eek

latour67,

When did I ever say the price I paid was a bargain for Angelus... Confused

Pricing and points is all relative to one's palate and preference. If you want to base all purchase based on points and $$, then the '95 Angelus is overpriced compared to the '75 Petrus when it was just released.

The price I paid for 2000 Angelus is not cheap, and it's overpriced based on the price of '95 Angelus. However, relatively speaking for a sought after 2000 vintage Bordeaux, it's not a bad price.

Well did you think you paid too much? Confused You must've thought you received value for the price you paid, especially since you also bought a Magnum for $315!

Also, there is a 20 year disparity between 1975 Petrus and 1995 Angelus; and only 5 years between the 1995 Angelus and the 2000 Angelus.

Simply put, Canadians are being gouged with the price of the 2000 Angelus ($348usd.)

latour67,

I don't think I paid too much for the wine. I paid a fair market price for the 750s and probably a better than average price on the mag as far as I am concerned.

I like the wine, and liked it enough to spend $150 on this. Expensive? Yes. Too much? No, not in my book.

I bought about 18 bottles of assorted 2002 MPs a while back for around $13 each. Those I paid too much for and was a waste of money. Much rather spend that money on 2/3 of a 2000 Angelus mag, at least in my book... Wink

pyang,

As long as you're satisfied with your purchase and pleased with the price you paid, you will be happy! Still, Canadians are being gouged, and Chateaux & Negociants are responsible! Frown

latour67,

From what I know, there was a 6-PK of 2000 Lafleur offered as futures in Alberta, Canada.

You won't believe the price...

I'll let our Albertan forumites answer the question definitively but this got me curious enough to go back and look at my 2000 Bordeaux futures catalogue. Neither Lafleur or Angelus were offered here, which means that the Angelus with a US$348 price tag were not likely bought on futures. This would support Latour's theory that the chateaux & negociants are the thieves in this case.

Just my $0.02.

It couldn't be a $1000. The Petrus futures price here was only CDN$795. Only Eek

Perhaps, but Petrus makes 3000 cases and Lafleur only makes 1000 cases. Eek

I'm a little out of sequence here, but to the poster who asked the 2000 production of Chateau Angelus...it was about 5500 cases.

FYI Troplong Mondot has the highest production of the "collectible" St. Emilions at about 8000 cases.

I just looked in my Bordeaux Book (Parker) and it shows 125,000 bottles produced by Angelus with 110,000 bottles produced for the grand vin, which includes Mags, Double Mags, 5/6liters, or over 9000 cases.

Troplong Mondot produces more than 10,800 cases, but Figeac produces more than 18,000 cases.

What is your source?

I was told by the person I traded for three bottles of the 2000 Lafleur with, he purchased those for $220 CAD each in Alberta.

It's now sitting quietly in my locker... Big Grin

I think the trade worked out for the both of us. I gave him one bottle each of the 2000 Lafite, Margaux, and Latour. Something about those were costing over $900 CAD each currently.

Quite the coincidence but I just received a newsletter from our government run wine sellers that the 2000 Lafleur will be available next Thursday morning for CDN$279 (US$212). Relatively speaking, that sounds like a good deal. But they do mention that quantities are limited.

I hope you can get a bottle for $212usd. Since there are only 1000 cases made, and it is a Parker 100 point wine, the cost in the USA is outrageous at $450+ to $750 Eek It doesn't matter though, you can't find it!

steve8,

If you have the resources, I would suggest you picking up all you can, for enjoyment or investment.

As latour67 stated, it's going for a minimum of $400 over here, and there is no retailer listed on winesearcher that even have the item in stock or pre-arrival.

There were two bottle sold on winecommune within the last 30 days for $740 & $771 respectively.

I didn't realize that Parker rated this 100. WS gave it 96 too. Hmmm, maybe I should buy one. I say one because there will no doubt be that limit. And I'll probably have to line up outside the store at 6:00 am in sub-freezing temperatures! Red Face

Latour67, I wasn't counting the second wine, just the Grand Vin. I had forgotten about Figeac, though. My source is the latest version of RP's Bordeaux, published in August. Though case production varies from year to year, RP has Angelus at 5500, Troplong at 8000, and Figeac at 10000.

Got one bottle for CDN$279. That was the limit as they only had 6 cases and there were 50 lunatics that got there before me. And I arrived at 6:05 am!! Big Grin

Guess I need to go change my posting of "best wine in your cellar".
