Howza 'bout a price tag of $465CDN grap the wallet! OUCH! That is $348 US for this bottle.
Seems if we want a bottle of 1st growth 2000 we have to grab our ankles! BLAME CANADA!!! Got Dead Arm for $55 CDN though. That's a steal in my book. Win some lose some. |

Ah, but Chateau Angelus is a First Growth, according to the St. Emilion Classification of 1954. It is one of 13 First Great Growths, Catagory 'B'.
See, Bordeaux.Com, a really great site for getting the basics and beyond of your Bords. |

for the link. After reviewing the 1855 chart I was doubting myself, but knew that I had read that this was the case. Wonderful link (obvious link), but now I am stuck in front of the computer for another hour. Too interesting to close.
Good weekend to you all! |

That even with the USD to Canadian exchange rate, the SAQ (many of you know my rants regarding the government-run liquor business here) has still marked this wine in excess of $200. All I have to say is SHEEEEESH!
I do not think that Bordeaux controls the pricing of the SAQ, especially when the American market will not buy. No that I have just said that, maybe Bordeaux is trying to make there money here instead of is the US (since French wine sales have plummeted there). Perhaps their mark-up is higher for Quebec than elsewhere. (TO-ers comment please) But still, I have never seen such a vast difference in market prices between the two countries. |

I just have a hard time imagining the SAQ being responsible for that mark-up. Maybe some of it, but I suspect Angelus did most of it. Regardless, if no one buys it, they won't do it again.

The list price on Ch. Angelus at the LCBO is $379CAD, but it is sold out.

supply and demand. How many Torontonians will come to Montreal to buy the bottle if it is sold out there? Conspiracy theory? SHEEEEEEEEESH! encore. The wine is no doubt an inexplicable mark-up, and a prelude of the cost of other first growths to come soon.

Blame the hype for the high prices.
Even here in Europe the prices are high. Angelus 2000 costs Eur 230.00 or $290 way beyond my price range. I was in Saint Emilion recently and the prices are the same there also. |

Angelus is another example of controlled releases maximizing profits. There is a warehouse full of this stuff and it is not available because they release it in such small allocations, the price per bottle is unusually high. Just say no and don't buy it.
I bought 4 cases of 1994 Angelus Futures for $45. per bottle. Don't you think they are now managing releases to maximize profits???? "Let them eat cake"----I'm not buying Angelus again! They have burned the bridge! |

What is the annual production of Angelus?

I would think it is 12,000/14,000 cases. I have seen the property, and it is not a huge place. Still, going from $45. to the equivalent $290usd is an outrageous increase. |

Thanks for the info Latour,
For some reason I always though Angelus had a very small annual production. |

FWIW. I bought the 2000 Angelus for $149.99, and was also able to pickup a mag at $315.
You can still find these for $160 on the left coast. --------------------------- 2003 Whirlwind Tour |

And I though I might like to live in BC. Yikes. Y'all need a Costco. $125 US. Of course, isn't medical care in Canada provided by the gov't. If you factor in what that costs me here, your wine is cheap.

They had this at one of the Costco's nearby for $187 a while back ~ 4-5 months ago. It's been gone and replaced with more Quintessa for some time...

Well I guess you got a real bargain! That's $1800 a case and you can't even drink it for 15 years! Try the time/value of money formula in 2016 and you'll find the real cost of the 2000 Angelus! The 2000 Angelus is simply overpriced, pyang. Perhaps it's the demand for the beautiful label! |

While we're on the subject of Angelus, whatever happened to the L in front of Angelus -- L'Angelus? Most wine lists still list it with the L. Just curious, but if you're a Virgo like me, which is "correct."
I have bottles of 89, 90, 95 and 00 and none of them have a (an?) L. |

latour67,
That's an argument I am not going to get into, because everything we as a group of winos would purchase are all overpriced compared to those that enjoy a nice $2 bottle of Charles Shaw. --------------------------- www.winebid.com |

Agreed!
Almost everything is overpriced nowadays, especially California Cabernet, Bordeaux, Australian Shiraz, etc, etc. Granted, there are exceptions, but for the most part? red4life |
