I could have sworn that I asked this question before on this website. However, I could not find the topic using the search function.
In any event, we are half way through 2008 so I thought I would see if the trend of lowering my average price per bottle was continuing. It is. My total purchases are down as well. Here are my results since 2004 (these totals do not include most everyday drinkers that are consumed within a couple months of purchase): 2004 242 bottles Average bottle price = $29.76 2005 297 bottles Average bottle price = $21.29 2006 263 bottles Average bottle price = $20.52 2007 353 bottles Average bottle price = $13.34 2008 YTD 135 bottles Average bottle price = $12.88 Is anyone else willing to look at Cellartracker and share? Just got started this year, lots of Oregon Pinot Noir's. Skewed #'s from 8 cases of Cotes du Rhone that I bought for $10 for a fall wedding. |

Not a good idea for me to post prices.
I was growing the cellar like crazy for a while, but over the past 18 months the consumption and purchases have come much closer together. (869 purchased versus 663 consumed--compared to the prior 4 years where where were 4,397 purchased versus 1,530 consumed) Purchases below: 2008 (230 bottles YTD) 2007 (639 bottles) 2006 (1,249 bottles) 2005 (989 bottles) 2004 (1,188 bottles) 2003 (971 bottles) Annual consumption (include some sold off to auction): 2008 (219 bottles YTD) 2007 (447 bottles) 2006 (407 bottles) 2005 (455 bottles) 2004 (350 bottles) 2003 (318 bottles) Boy, this data *really* wants to be in one, single report... ___________ -Eric 'CellarTracker' LeVine It rhymes with wine... |

I don't buy nearly as much as many of you; only spot buys for me and almost nothing from new vintages. Overall, my average purchase price was $71.41. The good news for me is that the average value per bottle is $107.55.
Sometimes it is an advantage to be old. I don't have to spend exhorbitant amounts of money on current vintage wines with vastly inflated prices. I probably won't be around when they are ready to drink anyway. |

2007 - 332 bottles, avg. $22.60
2008 - 218 bottles, avg. $35.56 Thankfully we didn't start using CellarTracker until last year, but I am sure the averages were much lower... -mJ "It's a black fly in your chardonnay..." -Alanis Morrisette Jersey Foodies/Wine Blog: http://jerseyfoodies.blogspot.com/ |

The pace of accumulation has been steady the past few years.
Suffice to say that my annualized 'per bottle cost' has risen, but, thankfully, so has the quality of the wine inside. |

Iv'e decided to limit my wine purchases and keep my cellar at 250 bottles. I share a cellar with my brother who has 300 bottles. 550 bottles between us is a nice number.

2008 - 130 bottles, avg. $62.43
2007 - 570 bottles, avg. $42.10 2006 - 994 bottles, avg. $37.90 2005 - 128 bottles, avg. $21.83 This year the average has been skewed a bit by some purchases early in the year of some older, pricier wines. If I plotted individual purchases, I bet I could fit a log-normal distribution to the data pretty well. |

This is a scary question. I started collecting in 2003 and over the last year have made a concerted effort to scale back.
2003 92 bottles avg 155.50 2004 523 bottles avg 94.76 2005 1,302 bottles avg 91.68 2006 1,032 bottles avg 94.36 2007 574 bottles avg 89.90 2008 229 bottles avg 110.44 |

okay, some of these numbers are just plain scary. Do the math and some people are spending 30, 40 and even over $100,000 a year on wine!!?!?!?
I officially no longer have a problem. Drink wine, and you will sleep well. Sleep, and you will not sin. Avoid sin, and you will be saved. Ergo, drink wine and be saved. Medieval German Saying |
