They buy well in advance so their trying to clear out a backlog in the warehouse. The problem is that no one wants to buy 2003s when 2004s are starting to come out. Not at the prices they are asking for the 2003s.

Over the past several years I think I've figured out their process. 1. See my order come in. 2. Notice the name on said order. 3. Move it directly to the bottom of the list. My neighbour's dog usually does better than me

Lottery .... I would love to know more about their lottery process ... comp generated ? staircase method ? want to leave early on a Friday so just pick a bunch method? Big Spenders bias ? New Spender bias ? Thoughts ?
No rhyme or reason. Don't even bother trying to understand it. Might as well be allocations based on the alignment of the stars at a particular minute.

There is a method, it just might not result in the person who should get a bottle actually getting that bottle. There are a bunch of people with stacks of paper orders that were randomly sorted into several piles. I was told that all orders are filled in order by each processor until the wines run out, but no limits are applied on the first run through. Then, limits are set for high-demand wines (i.e. 2 bottles of Deus ex Machina per person), and the order fillers go back through the piles from the top (in the same order as the first run through), reducing over-filled orders down to the limit, and applying any freed-up bottles to the next valid order. If you were 10th in the pile and there were 20 bottles to allocate, you should ultimately get your 2 bottles...or at least you would if there was only 1 person processing the orders. If there are 2 order processors, and you are 10th in processor A's pile, then once the limits are set and the processors go through the piles for the second run through, if there are 40 bottles to allocate, then all other things being equal the top 10 orders in each pile should each get their two bottles. Problem is that if processor B goes through their pile faster than A, or A goes out for a smoke or lunch, then maybe the top 20 people in B's pile get an allocation but nobody in A's pile get allocated (even though when the orders were initially randomly set into piles before the first run through, your order was in a spot that should have received an allocation). I guess there are 2 lotteries, the first is where your order is set in the initial printing/piling of orders, the second is whether you get stuck in the pile of a fast order processor or a slow one. This is what I have been told, who knows if it is true. All I know is I never get lucky!

Nothing is random is a person is involved. How do the papers get put into there initial strating positions ? Last fax on top, first on top, or are they mixed around a little. I think the LCBO owes it to us to state there allocation process

Once again, don't even bother trying to wrap your head around the allocation process or believing what they explain to you on the phone. Consider it magic. All the orders go into the box, everything gets allocated and you should feel privileged to receive what you do. Don't even bother thinking, "Thank you sir, may I have another?" Pricing in this catalogue is bats**t insane for some items - the aforementioned Masseto and Grange, not that I was planning on buying them anyway.

I agree - I think this is one of their better catalogues in quite a while. (Will there be another one leading up to Christmas? There isn't much time if there is.) I particularly like some of the older vintages they have offered. Since 1988 is our wedding year, I'm planning to buy some of the '88 Giacomo Borgogno Riserva Barolo to add to my meagre collection of wines from that year (mainly some Aldo Conterno Barolo and a bunch of Sauterne). It would be nice to change the wine list, but I won't even know if I'm getting the Borgogno in time for this year's anniversary

Their website still refers to the May release. I received the printed material yesterday.

Maybe they are trying to tell you something about who gets their order picked in the lottery.

I changed the dates and submitted via email this morning.

I've found no correlation between when my order was submitted and how much of it gets filled. Similarly, a larger or smaller order doesn't benefit you.

Nah, I think they get more joy telling me by simply not calling me when the allocation confirmation calls go out.
