Bez, donations are optional, but you can see the recommendations here: http://www.cellartracker.com/payment.asp

And as PurpleHaze says, the less you type the better. Even if you are entering a wine from a new producer, just type the name of the appellation so you can build a new wine from an existing one. For example "brunello" or "chianti riserva" or "napa cabernet". All will yield a lot of hits, and then it's just a few clicks to use this as a template and swap in a different vintage and producer.

I'm pretty dumb. How do you enter bottle prices? I entered my entire cellar and they all have $0.00 in the price section.

TomNYC, there has got to be an easier way then I did it, but here is what I did

1. close to the botom you will see "Purchase Information" Under that you will see "Click here to add a new purchase..." Hit that.
2. Fill out all the info including the cost than hit "add new purchase"
3. Hit "edit" under "My Inventory" then put a check mark beside the bottle that has no price
go down and mark the cirle next to "Delete"
Than hit "Update" and you are done.

I hope that there is an easier way than this but it works for now.

Tom, when you add wine to your cellar you have two choices:
1) Just add inventory without any associated price info
2) Add a purchase with price and optionally the purchase date, source etc. This will create inventory.

Now, if you have already entered all of your inventory, what Sean is describing is a way to backfill and fix things up. I plan to make this a lot cleaner in the future, but for now there isn't a better way if you have already created inventory without an associated purchase.

Alternatively, the site also allows you to track the value of a wine (per bottle size) as distinct from the purchase price. A lot of people blow off the price and just fill in the value later. There is a link on the site to add these in bulk.

Please let me know if I can answer any other questions, or if these answer don't make any sense.

Ditto. Great site and great program. I would make a small recommendation. I find it hard to get back to my list of wine- a sort of quick link toolbar on the top of the website once logged in would be nice. But otherwise, thanks for a great site.

Their is a link (under "reports") on the left for "All Wines". That will take you to your current list.

I keep wanting to take the leap and get on board - agree this is a great program. It's the initial data entry that has kept me from doing so as yet - with nearly 2000 bottles the task seems utterly daunting. If only there was a way to jump start your inventory by importing from an Excel spreadsheet...

Mimik, check out the beta of the new site UI that I have been working on for the past month. It handles your scenario and a lot more.

Eric, I wish there was an easy way...

One of the things that separates CellarTracker from a lot of other products is a centrally maintained database of wines that flow across all users. In essence, I try to make sure that the same wine exists exactly once regardless of how many people have it. The problem with a bulk import is that everyone defines these things differently and one bad import could create hundreds of dupes...

If for each wine in your spreadsheet you were willing to look up the matching CellarTracker ID, I actually can do bulk import. (I did this the other day for a 5000 bottle cellar.) However, it is a bit time consuming for me, so before I open this facility up I will probably have to charge an hourly rate for the service. And of course the person organizing the bulk import spreadsheet has to do a lot of work, albeit probably a lot less than clicking through the site for every wine.

It's something I've thought of. The challenge is that most temps can't read wine labels and know which end is up. I am working with a couple of folks who inventory cellars for a living. Instead of giving their clients an Excel spreadsheet, they are starting to just inventory the more PC-savvy ones on CellarTracker.

I was fortunate on 2 fronts:

1. Our collection is not that big and
2. MLV took care of it, so I did not have to do anything.

I was just kidding based on Eric's post, but its funny you have given it thought. I would think college kids could figure it out.

It sort of depends on your collection. If you have a lot of CalCab or Bordeaux, it's pretty easy. If you have a lot of Burgundy or Italian where tiny labeling differences can make a huge deal, it would be a scary task to delegate to a temp.

Makes sense Eric, I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet and allocate some time to the task. I am anxious to use the features of the program, just not anxious to do the date input! Big Grin

bez,

Big Grin

I actually took bez's approach, but once I got started, I just had to enter one more wine. Then another. And so on and so on.....

To give yourself some positive feedback, after you've put in a few dozen bottles, go to "printed reports" and print yourself a wine list. It looks great!

Eric Levine - It would be nice to have the ability to control the "sorting" within this report (by vintage particularly), but your site is truly a pleasure.
