I say 6 out of 10 you get what you pay for and 3 out of 10 you get LESS what you pay for.

Generally speaking i agree. Fortunately I'm close to reach 7/10. Matter of experience, I think

Thanks

I'm not sure. I've never actually measured the wine to make sure I'm getting the full 750ml that I paid for. I guess it could be more, or maybe less, don't know.

I will tell you however, that the next time I pull a cork on a bottle and only find half a bottle of wine, I'll let you know.

Once I tested it.
I decanted a bottle and marked it on the decanter..
The second bottle I decanted filled the decanter more.

It shouldn't matter, unless those variables changed between bottles.

A lot more than I did when I was a rookie. I did some rating chasing when I first started. I'm pretty happy with where my buck goes now and what I get for it.

Of course, most good wine is still way overpriced.

merde! I am afraid your findings can't be tabulated as your ability to measure was impaired after the first bottle.

If the actually thread is regarding the quality and not the quantity that one gets, I agree that experience plays a big part in that. I am learning, and learning, and learning, and while in my comfort areas, with varietals, vintages and producers that I know and like, it is probably in the 7/10 range.

For everything else, I like to experiment and try new wines, and styles, and producers, and my hit/miss ratio is less than in the 'comfort' zone wines. Probably I would say 5/10 are value and 4/10 are 'chalk it up to a learning experience'.

I have been back 'into' wine for about 1 1/2 years now, and I would be curious as to when people think that you reach your 'zen' peak, if you do, is it 5 years, 10, 20,...

thanks, Dale

I think you almost always get what you pay for. The problem is, you may be paying for something other than the wine. In an ideal world, if you are paying a lot of money for wine, you expect a great wine, and often times you do really get it. Unfortunately, in other cases, you are paying a lot of money for mediocre wine with a famous reputation, and that's exactly what you get. In other instances, you are paying for scarcity. In all instances, you got what you paid for, but in the 2nd two cases you didn't get what you THOUGHT you were paying for, which was good wine, when all you got was a famous label or a rare wine. So be careful; are you paying for the wine, the scarcity, or the snob appeal? You will get what you paid for!

I have been getting what I pay for a lot lately. I have learned to pick out wines that I like. I am enjoying Italian, French and U.S. wines. For a while I made several bad decisions but I am enjoying this hobby and drinking the actual wine immensly, now!

Watch these forums. My experience shows that the highly recommended wines are right on.
Be careful when you are tasting at various wineries. You can get wrapped up in the hype and after visiting a few spots everything tastes good. Do not buy the dessert wines as they all are wonderful until you get home and try them the next day. Some of my worst purchases have been on the "special event" circut. Hold on to your wallet.

I'm paying for terroir, baby! If it's real estate what's taking my ducats, I'd better be able to taste the stony, well-drained soil in every bottle!

I always get what I pay for and sometimes more. I only buy from small wineries which only make a limited number of cases. I taste before I buy.

This is very hard to say.

Do you judge it purely on how good the contents are? or how good it is compared against wines of similar price from similar grapes? or do you get additional enjoyment due to sentimental factors? Did you open the bottle in a fit of pique?
