Any thoughts out there about several bottles of red, whites, or ports being bought as momentos from these years(my kids birth years). Also, where? Thanks, Jim

Whoever was born in 1990 will give you the easiest job! France (Bordeaux and Burgundy & Rhone), Italy (Piedmont and Tuscany) had spectacular years. Buy judiciously and make sure the wines have been well stored. Vintage Champagne might make another expensive option for 1990.
1992 - a tough year all over? Perhaps a good Californian Cabernet? Port for sure. 1993 - OK years for Brunello and Barolo, but not specacular. Perhaps Burgundy? I'm sure many others will have some good ideas for you. Happy hunting, and welcome! PH This message has been edited. Last edited by: PurpleHaze, |

What price ranges and when do you want to drink them?
If you're going to drink these with your kids as they go through their mid and later teenage years, and you want to spend a tremendous amount of money, 1992 Dalla Valle 'Maya' is one of the best wines I've ever tasted. But price range and agability requirements are really necessary here to help guide you. "What contemptible scoundrel stole the cork from my lunch?" -- W.C. Fields |

Generally- All over the world, including Rieslings for 1990. Cal Cab & Port for 1992. 1993 Some Italians & Red Burgundy(maybe Cal Cab, lighter vintage; may not last long enough). No other whites. Buy magnums. Check Wine-Searcher.com by vintage.

1990 was also very good in Australia.
1993 was a good year for Tokaj. I've got some great 1993 Disznoko 5 puttonyos. I believe Tokaj ages well, though I've never tried anything 20+ years old. You might want to page tsunami - he's the expert. The problem with Tokaj is that they are hardly ever available in bottles larger than 500ml. http://scmwine.wikispaces.com http://scmwine.blogspot.com http://blogs.sun.com/davetong http://twitter.com/davetong |

I think you could say that Tokaji Aszu ages well without fear of retribution. A six puttonyos wine will age as long as your children and an Essencia longer. There's nowt wrong with 500ml bottles, buy cases of them, but do ask Tsunami for the right ones to buy.

The 1990 Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace are acknowledged classics that will easily last the distance. Penfolds also released special bin wines , 90A and 920, from the same vintage. These are reds that are generally considered to be as good as Grange, but because they don't have the same collector appeal as Grange you can get them for cheaper, but supply is always short - the 90A is considered the better of the two. Wendouree is a small scale Australian producer that produces very good wines that live forever and 1990 is good year for them too. they will probably be very hard to find. Tahbilk 1860s vines shiraz is another live forever Oz shiraz, but vintage variation means that I'd only recomment the 1990. With the other wines mentioned the 92s and 93s will still be very good, but not majestic. Some other 20+ year Australian wines include: Penfolds Bin 707, St Henri Moss Wood Cab-Sav (avoid 93) Cullen Cab-Sav (avoid 93) Jasper Hill Emilys Paddock and Georgias Paddock Jim Barry The Armargh Yarra Yering Dry Red #2. Wolf Blass Black Label (1990 only recommended) As for whites, I'll put a general recommendation in for Riesling. I'll let the people who know about German and Austrians make their recommendations. From Australia the Leo Buring Leonay and Grosset Watervale rieslings would be the best bet to go 20+ years. 1990 was a great vintage, 92 decent, 93 was a bit scary. Hunter Valley Semillon is another very long lived dry white from Australia. Tyrells Vat 1 and McWilliams Lovedale and Elizabeth beng good examples. The years you want all fit into the good but not great category. It was my Uncle George who discovered that alcohol was a food well in advance of modern medical thought. - P. G. Wodehouse |

I think '92 will be the problem worldwide. I can't think of an entire region that performed perfectly.

For 1992, I'll suggest you consider California Napa Cabs: 1992 Beringer Reserve Cab or 1992 Dunn Howell Mountain Cab. The Dunn should be good till your kids 21st birthday if always properly properly stored, but that Beringer Reserve might be pushing it.

I've tasted the 92 Monte Bello and it's got a good future ahead of it.
But overall I'd agree with PurpleHaze - port for sure. Hmm. 90 Sauternes, 92 Port, 93 Tokaj - if they have a sweet tooth they'll have a great party in a few years time! http://scmwine.wikispaces.com http://scmwine.blogspot.com http://blogs.sun.com/davetong http://twitter.com/davetong |
