Tried the 2007 Von Hovel last week, the vintage shows some promise.

Despite the obvious ethical dilemma that some of us go through, he will just buy it without a discussion with the wine shop.

What kind of discussion with the wine shop should I have? Are you assuming that this was a mismark? It wasn't. It was put on clearance for $3 with full knowledge of ownership. And by the way, I did talk to the owner about this wine and how happy I was to find it at the checkout counter.

Are we as consumers supposed to always let a retailer know when they have priced something incorrectly or too low? Do they tell us when they have overpriced something? Just adding a different point of view for one to consider.

As a former retailer, if I recall correctly, wouldn't you want to know if you had something priced at 1/2 of what it was (thereby taking a loss), or even worse?

When I have let retailers know of significant mispricings, I have still left happy.

That said, if they refuse to change it, then seller beware.

The store where I bought the $3 Messmer sold it to me for a profit. I've talked to the owner about his pricing on numerous occasions. Seems that you accused me of being unethical in buying that particular wine and you were wrong. Normally an apology is in order.

With respect to the Prum GKA, I don't know if it was mismarked or not. It was correctly labelled on the shelf of a large retailer at a very good price and rang up at the shelf price.

I apparently was incorrect about the $3 wine.

However, I call bullshit on the Prum GKA. You didn't know if it was mispriced or not? I am sure that you knew that the retail price of that was almost (if not more than) 2x the regular auslese.

It is this story, in particular, that you have told before, which set the precedent for my assumption on the $3 wine.

You should not assume that a wine is mismarked just because it is less than suggested retail. Perhaps buying a wine at a 50% discount might seem strange to many wine buyers. However, based upon my purchases over the last few years, paying 50% is actually the norm. Extremely few were mismarks. I don't think I have any more or any less mismarked bottles in my cellar than the average board member.

Here is a list of some of my recent German purchases (none of them were mismarks):

2005 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese 375ml $20 (msrp $43)
1999 A. Christmann Konigsbacher Idig Riesling Spätlese trocken $10 (msrp $40)
2005 Schlossgut Diel Dorsheimer Goldloch Riesling Spätlese $7 (msrp $35)
2003 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett $5 (msrp $23)
2001 Georg Breuer Rüdesheimer Berg Schloßberg Riesling $6 (msrp $65)

Don't forget Premier Cru's JJ Christoffel's "giveaway" a couple years ago.

Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel

I'm contemplating opening one tomorrow night. I know I should wait but if anyone has had it would it be serious infanticide to do so? I have three of them and I'm dying to try one if it's not a complete waste, maybe even if it is.

If you can find the conviction, wait. About a year ago I tried one of the G-H GKA, which is supposed to be enjoyable sooner than W-S. While it was indeed enjoyable, what realy struck me was how freakin' young it was and inexpressive compared to what it will be. Felt like I robbed myself.

I have 6 of the W-S GKA and I'm not planning on touching any of them for another decade.

The topic of this thread was "What 2005 German Wines Have You Purchased?" I can find cases of the 2007 easily. My comment was in reference to finding a case of the 2005.
