Also, Vino Me....could you summarize what makes a Goldkapsel different (other than a Goldkapsel of course!) Also I've seen "auction" designated Riesling. What is that?

JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese - WS 97
JJ Prum Graacher Himmelreich Auslese - WS 95 According to the Wine Spectator reviews, these won't be at their best for another 2-3 years. Those of you who have a lot of experience with German wines, how much is to be gained by waiting? |

Wilson, JJ Prum wines normally benefit from age, especially the two you listed. I have tasted a few of mine, spritzy and great, but somewhat infanticide.
My list, about 3 cases and counting (if KC shops will cooperate; about 1/3 of these purchased in Chicago): Weingut Johannishof Johannisberg V Riesling Kabinett Theo Minges Gleisweiller Holle Riesling Spatlese Monchof-Robert Eymael Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese Selbach Riesling Kabinett MSR Fish Label Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Spatlese Von Hovel Balduin v Hovel Riesling Spatlese Leitz Rudesheimer Magdalenkreuz Riesling Spatlese JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenhur Riesling Spatlese JJ Prum Graacher Himelreich Riesling Auslese JJ Prum Graacher Himelreich Riesling Spatlese JJ Prum Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spatlese Prinz zu Salm-Dalberg Two Princes Riesling Qba Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Spatlese Albert Gessinger Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese * Dr Pauly-Bergweiler Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spatlese Schmitges Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese * Schloss VollradsRiesling Kabinett Gunderloch Riesling Kabinett Jean-Baptiste Dr Loosen Saint M Riesling Qba Dr Loosen Dr L Riesling Qba Leitz Dragonstone Riesling Qba Monchof-Robert Eymael Riesling Qba St. Urbans-Hof Riesling Qba |

Probably much longer than that. Now I'll have to wall-up part of my cellar to keep them safe from myself. *********** You never see crazy people walking the streets, screaming about atheism, do you? |

I am in awe of those of you who like Don (3 cases), Vino Me (4 cases), and Arie (10 cases for the championship) who are depleting the German vineyards. Assuming that you are buying a lot of other wines as well in quantity, the question arises, are you purchasing them as an investement for future resale, do you drink a couple of pricey bottles every night, or will you just never catch up?
That said, it does appear that the high end German wines offer excellent value, probably because sweet wines are not a universal taste. I hope that this fact keeps them reasonable. |

Wilson- Although German wines provide excellent value, they do not appreciate very well and therefore are not good candidates for investment purposes. I am in "I buy them to drink" category but also never expect to catch up with what I have.
PH- Here are a couple links to previous threads I started which will answer all your questions and many you probably have not thought of: Goldcap and other German info. German Auction Wines. VM |

Yes! A Riesling thread ... Like Purple Haze, this varietal has captured my attention in a big time way.
Some of your lists are impressive, but daunting for a neophyte drinker of the German juice. I want to buy some 2005 (considered a landmark vintage correct)? What would your suggestions be, keeping in mind high QPR and ageability? Just 3-5 would be nice. Thanks C2 |

C2, JJ Chrisoffel makes many good reasonably priced rieslings that are under $20 and get very good ratings. The Leitz dragonstone is always a winner too for $14!

Wilson,
Ditto on what VM said .. I drink everything I buy. My wife is not much of a red wine drinker, but we spent 4 years in Germany and share a love for rieslings. I have never found a new world riesling that could come close to German, although Hogue in WA is not bad. Due to storage limitations, I have never been able to keep any Prum bottles around for more ten 10 years, but I was lucky to taste some older vintages, the best being a '71 auslese. I have never tasted Yquem, but that '71 was heaven in a glass. Don |

What improvements occur when you cellar a great German auslese for ten years or so?

Wilson,
Here is something that I previously posted on the board which should answer your question: "Aging German Riesling is not like aging Bordeaux. Although there can be a dull phase which Auslese Riesling will go through from say years 2-6, it is never as severe as what Bordeaux goes through. Furthermore, you don't have to deal with overpowering tannins in Riesling like you do in Bordeaux. Lastly, the metamorphosis that Riesling goes through is very different than the change which occurs in Bordeaux. In Bordeaux, the wine integrates and it is almost widely accepted that aged Bordeaux is more pleasurable than an immature bottle. Drinking a young German Riesling is like drinking Spring in a bottle. It is fruity, minerally, spritzy (often) and has a lighter body and texture. Drinking aged German Riesling is like drinking Autumn in a bottle. It is heavier, more complex and the fruit is less tropical. It is not altogether clear to me that the latter style of German Riesling is always better than the former. Particularly with the Graacher Himmelreich vineyard which seems to drink better at a young age than wines from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr (note: I have not opened any of my WS Auslese for this reason)."
