Gee, what a pleasant surprise, to see this old thread come back to life! We have hardly had any since my post above many months ago. I was going to try to reply from memory, but instead I think I'll use this as an excuse to actually see what I've bought over the past year. Nothing too exciting I expect....

Maverickdrinker: you have made my heart sing! I have been tempted to order 6 bottles each of th 2000 Graham and either the Smith Woodhouse or Taylor from Berry Brothers futures in London, but as there is not guarantee that I can get it all back here without paying the 40% ( Eek Mad Frown Eek) duty, I was hesitating. I'll now wait to see what our government offers and at what price. Thanks again! Smile

I'm amazed by how many people have young Port and not mature Port. IMO vintage port takes over 20 years, (for my palate 30 years) to mature, it's almost indestructable and doesn't cost much more than current offerings. So why aren't more people buying 77, 83 or 85 vintages?

My Port collection consists of approximately:

55 Grahams x 8
55 Taylors x 9
63 Grahams x 1
70 Taylors x 2
70 Grahams x 3
70 Dow x 2
77 Grahams x 6
77 Taylor x 5
77 Fonseca x 3
77 Dow x 3
83 Grahams x 4
83 Dow x 2
83 Taylor x 4
83 Fonseca x 4
85 Grahams x 6
85 Taylor x 4
85 Fonseca x 4

Well, for my budget at least, the more mature ports are just too expensive. I've got the space to store my port like it should, so I'm happy to buy '94ers and letting them age for years. Most VP from '77 and older start from around $100 over here, and that's just to much for me (many from '94 sell for $30 - $40).

Steve,

A quick look on Wine-Searcher.com showed several merchants offering 1977 Dow, Graham & Taylor for $65-70.

1994 currently cost as much, or more! I also checked into 2000, the average price was $50.

It's just my opinion, but if you enjoy Vintage Port, mature examples are available for a song! And Port more than any other red wine, because it's fortified needs 20 or more years to fully come around to the point where it's components are completely married.

Pomerollvr, that are good prices. However, I haven't seen them in The Netherlands! I do agree, there are few things as tasty as a mature port. And sometimes I DO get lucky (Dow '77 for $46 => yes!). The prices for the 2000 Vintage appear to be the same in the US as in Europe, making the '94ers (with Dutch prices) a relative bargain.

Pomerollovr - some very good points.

I have noticed some 70s and 80s vintage Ports from fine producers for under $100 or thereabouts of late... really should pick up a few...yummy

Steve,

Check out Wine-searcher.com and sign up fpr the pro version. It will be easy to have the wines shipped from England giving you mature Port to enjoy.

THOTH,

I'm glad I can help you see the light. IMO, there is no reason to buy young Port when mature Port is available for clsoe to the same price.

All hail Tsunami, Portlover (and port collector) extraordinaire! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Still haven't wandered down to the basement to count the new bottles y, but off the top of my head, in addition to those listed in the original post, I have added:

-7 halves 1997 Sandeman Vau
-1 1995 Vesuvio
-1 1994 Vesuvio
-3 1987 Vargellas
-2 or 3 more 1985 Graham
-2 more 1985 Fonseca
-1 1983 Cockburn (does anyone NOT love Jan Luthman!? Confused)
-1 1983 Fonseca
-1 1983 Graham
-1 magnum 1977 Graham
-1 1966 Offley's (but I drank it already)
-2 1963 Delaforce (still got one of those babies left)

I think that's it, and hope I'm not duplicating from the first list. About 75 bottles in all.

Nice to re-read this old thread. I have about three cases, mostly 1994, but also some 1992, 1985 and 1983.

Back to the issue of buying new release, or aged port. The issue here is the use of your money, use of your cellar space, and inflation.

If a new release port costs $50, and you get 7% long term return on your money in the stock market or a home or whatever, then is it better to use those $50 to to buy and properly store (usually about $1.50 per year per bottle) new release port, (which actually makes your cost + storage $80), or to pass on the port, invest the $50, let the investment grow, and buy the port in 20 years when it is ready?

My impression is that you can invest the money, buy the port at, say $175 in 20 years, and have lots of money left over.
