Well, my carry-on problems were solved, unfortunately.

2:30 p.m. - arrive at LaGuardia Airport for 5 p.m. flight
4:30 p.m. - incoming plane "diverted"; flight delayed until 6 p.m.
6:00 p.m. - flight delayed until 7:05
6:30 p.m. - torrential rain and lightning hits LaGuardia; second incoming plane told to circle until storms pass; flight delayed until 7:25
7ish - circling plane told to proceed to baltimore; flight delayed until 8:25
8:20 p.m. - flight delayed until 10 p.m.
8:45 p.m. - flight canceled
9:30 p.m. - checked bags returned; well more than 100 people in line for cabs back into Manhattan; no cabs showing up

Bus ride to Grand Central: Priceless (actually, $12)

And the best news? I'll be back at the office tomorrow!

Have a great night everybody, and thanks for the advice on checking wine.

- Rob

Learning never to fly out of LaGuarida... priceless.

While obviously I am willing to go through what needs to be done to maintain safety, I think the authorities could do a better job of profiling potential terrorists. Clearly, frisking the caucasian, 80 year old lady in a wheel chair is ridiculous. It seems the terrorists have a certain profile, which is apparent.

Some would call me racist for these comments, but these same people cannot dispute that profiling a certain type of passenger would not result in utilizing our already limited resources in a more effective way.

Why should everyone suffer based upon the actions of a few, especially when the few are easily identified?

I think frisking 80 year old women is a little silly, but there does need to be some "random" spot checking going on. I have no problem focusing on likely groups, but remember; of the 3 major domestic terror attacks on our soil one of them was perpetrated by someone who looked like mwagner7700!! Eek

Sadly, to the "enlightened" european governments, and more and more the United States, equality is more important that freedom.

I'm afraid we continue to learn the hard way that they are mutually exclusive.

To date, I've had no problems with breakage when putting bottles into those neoprene totes inside my checked baggage.

red wineaux,

me neither, that is obvious and irrelevant

the point made, near the very beginning of this thread

is that things have changed, expect delays of one kind or another

A few years ago, I checked two cases of great Central Coast wine at LAX back to the East Coast and had no problems. I went to a wine store that had a wine club and they gave me a few of their shipping containers: Big boxes with the styrofoam in them.

Most Muslims are not terrorists. Most terrorist are Muslims.

It's not racism, it's math. Unfortunately, profiling needs to be performed.

I can live without the luxury of carry on luggage. I'm not happy about it. Unfortunately it's probably neccesary.

Please, what is obvious and irrelevant? My post regarding a possible answer for a problem or your agreement with my solution?

I thought that this thread included poster's suggestions like the aluminum packing case, not just that we were all to bemoan the fact that there will be delays.

Sorry, did I miss your appointment to thread monitor?

I Used to work in an airport and if you think about it they can ban you from bringing it thru to the plane, but they can't stop you from buying it at a shop or Duty-Free and carrying it on. I have sent wines back when I took a plane and the best to me is a small wooden crate or heavy cardboard box filled with bubble wrap or packing peanuts. Wink Good luck

keep your pants on, it's not personal

i'm just sayin' that most know how to protect their wine from breakage (obvious)

my point was: that was not the answer yesterday (relevance)

possible solution: bypass the guard

bring the lizard king boat float

so now that you can't bring wine or other spirits on the plane, does that mean it will be harder to get 'bombed' in flight?? sorry, that was really bad.

mcc is correct, nothing liquid or paste, regardless of where it came from. I had to ditch my lip balm at DCA today, I had already tossed my toothpaste and mouthwash before leaving the hotel.

This will impact me, I often carry wine in carryon luggage, largely due to the fact that I seldom check luggage and when I do check wine I’ll only do so with foam shippers which are not always readily available. But I will adapt, I’ve often though this is a huge loophole, I have carried as much as 12-750’s in my carryon on occasion. That much gasoline could bring a plane down, let alone something more potent.

As an experienced travelling wine exporter, this is - or could be the end of carry on samples, which I d0 to reduce the additional weight restriction. 8btls x 1.5 kg = 12kg, and getting that on board saved sh1tload of overweight charges.
What are the duty free guys going to do.?
Any way, if you have to pack your wine in the case - stuff your wine into Runners, boots or as last resort sleeve them with your dirty socks. Anything to prevent the bottles clashing together.
Safe flying
