2003 Sant Elena PG, too hot to really enjoy. Sweating and drinking are not good.

Split a bottle of 7 deadly Zins with my father in law last night over a pan of ziti. I guess "jammy" is the word to describe that bottle. It would be better in November outside.

Had a 375 of Edna Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir last night. Tasted like cherry licorice.

Last night:

2002 Daniel-Etienne Defaix Chablis Vielles Vignes...stony, chalky on the palate with a lemony finish (26.99)...BD88

2003 Inama Soave Classico Vigneto Dulot...lots of perfume on the nose, cottony finish, a food friendly wine (22.99) BD86

2005 Balandran Rose (made from Grenache, Mouvedre) Lots of strawberry on the nose, it was a dry rose, the nose is much better than the palate...BD87

2002 Vincent Girardin Meursault 1er Cru Le Poruzot-Dessus...never had a nose like this before, nose of straight up sulfur from an orifice and rotten cauliflower, the bottle wasn't corked and no TCA, very unbalanced...unrated

2004 Marchesi Di Gresy Nebbiolo...cherry on the nose like all other Nebbiolos, 13.5% alcohol that felt like it was 15%+, nothing special here (19.99) BD85

2002 Altamura Napa Valley Cab...nice fruit, dark plum with a mushroom and mothball finish, well balanced (69.99)...BD92

Last night at Brasserie de la Buvette on Via Vittoria in Rome:

2001 Fanti Brunello @ 45 Euro

that went fabulously with a spinach/pear salad and squid/artichoke main course.

If I die and go to heaven (or better yet, become a corrupt Italian politician), I want to have dinner here once a week. The owner of this restaurant is really into wine, and his list just keeps getting better and better. He made me taste his latest find - a sangiovese/cabernet blend from a small winery near Montalcino called Lamo, and after dinner, we had grappa made from amarone. The grappa was quite dark, almost like a brandy, and quite aromatic compared to most grappas.

Cool 2001 Chateau Lagrezette Cahors Malbec

2003 Vina Requingua Puerto Viejo Reserve Cab (Our sommelier told us to taste first, then let sit for a few hours, and taste again. Amazing...a whole different wine...lots of acidity at first taste....smooth, full, and mellow hours later.)

Last night...

2004 Foxen Pinot Noir - my first PN since 2002/2003. Glorious. I'm hooked all over again. Nice cherries, violets and mushrooms on the nose all fading in and out of phase. Once the alcohol burned off and the acidity integrated better into the wine, these flavors gave way to darker fruit that, unlike the Shiraz's we usually drink, danced around the palette. Wow.

2004 Piping Shrike Barossa Shiraz - I had this a couple months ago and was a little turned off at how striking the pepper was. I actually enjoyed it a little better this time. Was good, but didn't finish as strong as it started.

For lunch today, the Marcarini 1998 .375 Barolo.

A gift from a good friend, this is an old world style Barolo drinking well from a .375.

Tonight, a white and red Burg.that I have yet to pick out.
