I recently purchased three bottles of 2005 Maybach Cabernet, in part given amazing ratings and at the suggestion of a friend. Oddly, I opened the first tonight and there was no cork!!I cant imagine this was intended. Sadly, I cant tell on the other two if there is a cork or not given the amount of sediment at the top of the shoulder, and i obviously dont want to open the other two just to check. The wine looks and tastes "ok", but i cant imagine it hasnt been damaged by not having a cork. Lastly, id imagine tha ageworthiness of the other bottles will also be comprimised. Suggestions? Thanks so much.

This is a new one for me.

Just push down on the top of the capsule where the cork should be. If there's not one there, you'll feel the capsule give. Unless this wine had a wax capsule, I'm amazed that this bottle didn't leak.

Ditto. I would also suggest contacting the winery. From other posts that I have seen, Chris Maybach appears to be a solid guy. I would certainly let him know your situation.

I'm no expert on the wax process, but how the heck could they have waxed it without a cork in place!? Eek

Did the "top" come off in a counter-clockwise direction, perhaps?

This thread has my vote for this years 'Twilite Zone' thread. Too many questions to even post.

A first time post adds more questions.

The only thing I can add is the bottles have a capsule, not wax. Only the Magnums have wax.

Sounds fugazy.......

Ahem Big Grin... regarding the original subject:

I'm really surprised the wine had not leaked. Foil capsules aren't usually airtight. Contact Maybach. Such a bottle slipping through quality control is certainly possible. Occassionally the cork won't feed on a corking machine and if someone isn't watching, the foil goes on right after.
