State laws vary. In California by law they have to open the bottle.
Having done so you can push the cork back in and take it home.

I've done that at restaurants that comp corkage with purchase.

I have a bit of a different take on the situation. To lay the foundation, I love to play golf and one of my life's desires is to play as many great golf courses that I can. I am also relatively new to wine, in fact, you guys on this board have taught me about 80% of what I know.

With all of that being said, I would not pay $800 to play any golf course in the world. I have already played about 15 in the top 100, so there is no course I need to play. Of course, it is easy to say since any private course not accessible, say Augusta or Pine Valley, would be free courtesy of a member. Still, there is no public golf course worth over a $250 fee to me.

Since I value golf over wine, about $200 is my upper limit on a bottle of wine. I absolutely know what I am playing on a good golf course, but I can only appreciate about 50% of what a great wine is trying to convey.
