No, if they already have one counterfeit bottle on the menu, who knows where they source their food from.

I've never paid $800 for a bottle of wine and I hope I never do.

Just one more sip.

the restaurant has been around far longer then the recent run up in prices and some of the harder to move bottles are just that. Hard to move.

I don't see how that would indicate it would mean it's a counterfeit.

You want to spend $31.55 an ounce to test it out. That is the price per ounce for a $800 bottle.

G-man, if you feel the place is reputable and the bottle looks to be in good condition . . . hunker down with 2-3 friends, get some food and split it. I would find it tough to pass up an oppurtunity to try a legendary wine like that for half of the best retail price. If you werent so far I'd fly up and split it with you.

Ditto. However, if I somehow did, I'm sure that shortly after I returned home, my life would come to a very quick and violent end. Frown

Boy, that would be a hard call to make. As jburman said, if you could trust in the provenance of the bottle, it would be difficult to pass up such a "bargain".

Still, $800 is $800.

Glad I don't have to make the call! Razz

Same here, except my demise wouldn't be quick. Long and painful.

g-man: I say take one for the team!

Definitely on the right track.
Announce this to 3 other of your wine geek friends and each cough up $200.
I'm thinking this is a win/win for everyone and a pretty easy sell amongst your group of friends. Smile

I've had the 1982 Lafite, and IMO, its not worth the tariff! Thick rich juice is still overpowered by a very backward and astringent tannic finish.

Okay, one of my bottles leaked so I opened the 1982 Lafite in 1995. I found this wine was so astringent I marked it to try again in 2012. Now I find that the WA recently reduced the score to 97+ (June 2009) down from the former rating of 100 points, and said it still needed 5-8 more years of cellaring to reach maturity. Maybe, maybe not!

Perhaps this wine is worth $800 to someone, but not me.

I'd stay for the meal. Then ponder the wine. Tough call on pulling the trigger.

Does this mean she should shut up and let you buy it?

And no, I don't think I would pay that much for a bottle. Maybe half, but I dunno...

What do you mean by "They won't let you buy it and take it home?" I read that as meaning if you order the bottle, they insist on your having it at the restaurant. I can't speak to wife related consequences, but if I wanted the bottle and the choice was between have it there or not at all, I'd arrange a special dinner there and have the bottle!

One reason they may insist on that is to prevent someone from buying it, taking it home, then claiming it was a bad or bogus bottle after leaving the premises.

The only reason I questioned the original meaning is because of a story I read a couple of years ago. I don't remember the where and what, but a manager at a high end restaurant was recounting in an interview about having a bottle they once refused to sell. I want to say it was a '45 or '61 Bordeaux, but it was several thousand dollars for the bottle. Someone came in for lunch when the wine director wasn't there and ordered the bottle. The manager came out and told the customers that it was a very special bottle they had had cellared for years. When it was opened, he wanted the wine director to be there, and for it to truly be an occasion in all respects. As such, he declined to serve them the bottle at that time, instead inviting them back for a dinner at their convenience, on the house with all due preparations, to enjoy with the bottle purchase. He said they were gracious, but never came back.
