easy choice - a

this has been my motto for the last year or so. about a year ago i decided to start upgrading my cellar. pretty much anything i thought was below 90 points had to go. i happy would trade 3 bottles of lesser wine for 1 bottle of higher quality wine. i actually have tradeed whole cases for 1 or 2 bottles over the last year. life is to short to drink bad wine.

I too vote for A - a single quality bottle. You can get the other any time you want.

I would take the 3 bottles...

I know many times I see people post how they do not care much for a wine, then give it an 87 Confused

For me, an 87 is a very nice wine and many times I find the difference between a 92 point wine and an 87 is...

My mood when I had it,

What food it was served with,

Who I was drinking it with,

Where I was drinking it,

At what point in its life I opened it,

and was it served with the right stemware and proper temp.

So, give me 3 good soild wines Smile

Depends on the friend. If they're not seriously into wine I'd have them get them 3 cheaper bottles.

If they're into wine I'd prefer to get the 1 expensive bottle.

The reasoning is that I'd intend to share the bottle with the friend, and I prefer to match the wine to the friend's level of expertise.

Agree with Pauly 100%. Not a commentary on the friendship, but strictly on one's ability to enjoy. I would personally want the one bottle.

It depends on the wine.
Three 87 point Oregon Pinot Noirs would be preferable to 1 93 point California Chardonnay.

However if the wines were switched I would choose the 93pt Pinot Noir.

I would take the one special bottle of wine. Forgetting value, I can always find some inexpensive, good qpr. Unless you're planning on spending $120+, finding a 93 pt wine is hard. In the $50+ range you still need to really put a lot of thought into it.

Plus, in general, I would drink less wine in order to drink, basically exclusively, 88+ point wines with most wines being above 90.

Since it's a gift, A.

However if I'm buying for myself I'll generally choose B.

I can't imagone people on thios site opting for three 87 point wines over one 93 point wine. Aren't we here because we're interested in quality wines. I don't want 87 point wines.

Just one more sip.

It could be 12 bottles but I still would chose A.

Denitely I'd go for A. I always love receiving a gift that is something I would not necessarily buy for myslef. I would consider a single, better, more expensive wine a treat and would probably not allow myself the indulgence if I were to buy it for myself.

Of course I'd choose the one bottle, but...

But what if your choices were:

A: One bottle of 94 point wine, or

B: Three bottles of 90-91 point wine.

At this point it gets a little more difficult to choose. I think I'd still pick the one bottle though...

Without a doubt, I would chose 1. Maybe I've just turned into a wine snob. But, except for cooking or quaffing simply because I feel like drinking a bottle at 11:00pm on a Tuesday night, I would not purchase a bottle knowing that I would rate it 87 points. A bottle that I would rate 93 points, however, I would go well out of my way to seek out and I would open it on a special occasion or, at least, on a weekend with a nice meal.

I generally don't buy wines that I would rate less than 90 points, so why would I want three as a gift?

A... no thought involved.

Gimme 3 bottles Mister.

I have plenty of special occasion 93 point wines right now and not enough special occasions. I could use more good everyday wines, especially ones to share with friends (or the in-laws) who aren't too interested in wines but would like a glass of something respectable to take the edge off and get the conversation rolling.

I certainly see the point made by Board O and others but when I look for a wine in my cellar on a Wednesday night, I don't have a lot of wines right now that are in my everyday drinking sweet spot. I would be VERY impressed and grateful for a gift of a fantastic bottle of wine but if someone gave me the choice of a 2001 Plumpjack cab (93 pts - $60) or a 3 bottles of 88 pt. '01 cabs -- Hanna ($18), Justin PR ($23), and Pine Ridge Rutherford ($35) I'll take the three bottles.

However, if the 93 point bottle is 2000 Bryant family or 2000 Colgin.... something I couldn't find in stores... well that would change everything.
