Looks like there's a fair amount - at least a case - of each of these as of this afternoon.

Ouch! Isn't this thread supposed to be about good prices at costco? I'd bite on the Pavie if I knew where it had been for the last 4 years. Other than that, aren't these pretty close to or at market price?

Those are good prices. Good luck finding the 05 Cos for less than that. Melchor for 52 is fantastic as well.

Yeah, a few of them are nothing special, but as Sticky said the Cos and Don Melchor I think are about as low as you can find them. The Taittinger is a good price, at least for around here where it usually retails for $45+, and based on winesearcher it looks like the Elderton is at the low end of the scale too.

Scottsdale North Hayden still has a few bottles of the Cos in and has also added a half case or so of 2005 Ducru Beaucaillou for $197

I asked the wine girl working there and she said they might be getting in some First Growths end of August/Early Sept.

That's a great price for the 2001 Pavie and 2004 Elderton....much better than the market price on those, at least around here. Can't wait till the store around my house is finally built.

Outside of the 05 Melchor, my costco hasnt had anything exciting in awhile. When they had their grand opening, they brought in a bunch of great wines..Mouton, Lafite, Sassicaia, Grange, Astralis, etc..but most were from lesser vintages (04 Bordeaux, 03 Italy, etc)so they are still sitting on the shelf. As such, they havent brought in any of the newer, better vintages- 05 Bordeaux & Rhone, 04 Italy,etc...

From what I've seen under this posting over the last several months, it seems that the Scottsdale Costco should win the award for the best high-end wine selections. I thought we did pretty well here in So Cal but never have I seen a Petrus or some of the other wines mentioned in the past at our stores.

Waltham MA Costco (the 2nd highest volume Costco wine shop in the US according to the manager!):

Penfolds Grange 2003 $240 $250 release (WS 94)

Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermatage La Chapelle 2003 $136 $155 release (WS 96)

Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta 2005 $55 $75 release (WS 96)

Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta 2004 $55 $70 release (WS 93)

Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Reserve 2004 $95 $125 release (WS 95, Top 100 #9)

Dedham MA Costco:

Chateau Dauzac Margaux 2005 $70 $45 release (WS 92)

Chateau Lynch Bages 2004 $72 $52 release (WS 89)

Torbeck Rig Run 2004 $150 (WA 99)

Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2003 $360 $325 release (WS 94)

Antinori Tignanello 2005 $90 $95 release (WS 92)

Interestingly, due to MA's silly wine laws, big retailers like Costco can only have 3 wine shops in the state. For Costco these are: Waltham, Danvers and Avon.

The wine shop in the Dedham location is not part of Costco, which is why the exit is past the point where the Costco checkers check your receipt, and the prices are obviously not as good as Waltham. My receipt says KH&H Liquors on it (I picked up some Tignanello just to continue my vertical).

Haven't been to Everett, but presumably the same is true there.

Yes, MA law is silly and I really wish they would do away with this and many other wine unfriendly laws (shipping laws for example).

One of the MA's law's requirements is that all wine stores must be opened to the public, and that means everyone, even those not part of the Costco or BJ club. As such, the entrances are by nature, more open to the public than the general Costco or BJ's. As for who owns them, I'm not sure but someone on this forum must know so I defer to them.

I don't really buy too many bottles from Costco for long-term aging, but I was wondering if the bottles that you've bought from Costco have been in relatively good condition e.g., not cooked, no seepage, etc. A few weeks ago, I noticed some wine residue on the neck of a 2005 Bordeaux bottle. I couldn't tell if the bottle was compromised because I didn't notice any seepage from where the cork was.

Most bottles at Costco are there for such a brief time that I don't think there is much to be concerned about. Not to mention their return policy is second to none.

Barbs,

What stores did you see the Rubicon Estate at this price? I paid that much for the cask last year at costco. Wonder if it is a pricing mistake.

south Irvine, CA today had 2005 Lafon Rochet for $42 and 2005 Leoville Poyferre for $80, both under the wine-searcher low price and way under the average price.

They also had 2004 Clinet for around $62, 2005 Pichon Lalande for around $125, and others, but the first two were the really good buys.

I usually shop at the new Costco in central Irvine (Jamboree and Barranca), and that one continues to have a huge but mostly forgettable inventory with no Bordeaux of note.
