Picked up a bottle of Kirkland Signature 2005 Napa Valley Meritage today for $10.99. I don't have high hopes, but we'll see how it goes.

Too funny. I was at Costco about an hour ago returning a corked bottle of wine and saw that and just shook my head and started laughing. Good luck. Joe ----- Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone. |

The 2004's have been on the shelf for almost a year now. I would start to get a bit concerned about storage. Not sure where the '98 HB came from. |

Great point Napacat. I thought the same thing prior to purchase so I did the ususal things to check them out (ullage, cork push etc.) to see if there were any visible signs that there may be a problem. No gaurantees of course but I did open a bottle of the Mouton to get a check and it was fine. I may check the HB in a week or so for the same reasons but I am not inclined to open any more for a while so time will tell. Great to see someone else from MI. I am newer to the state and need to connect with others who share our special interest. Costco Aliso Viejo, CA had the following yesterday:
2005 Montrose $110 at least a case 2005 Smith Haut Lafitte $64, at least a case 2004 Lafite Rothschild $164. Got the last two, the system said they had 7 left, couldn't find them |

No, Costco is like Sam's on steroids ... much better products, better prices and better help! There's a reason that Costco sells the most wine in the US! -Parnelli Remember, Jesus' first miracle was to turn water into wine! |

What I don't understand is... I thought that Costco's wine buyer defected to Sam's Club about 4 years ago to improve their wine program. I would say that I have seen a drop off in Costco's program since then, but no improvment in Sam's. |

The perceived drop in the quality of Costco’s wine program stems largely from the mediocre pricing of 2005 Bordeaux. Since Costco operates from a set profit margin on wine (excluding closeouts) the perception is the current buyer was slow on the futures purchases unlike 2000 and 2003.
As for Sam’s, if anything the quality of their wine program has diminished. Many stores appear poorly managed with unkempt bins and stocks of obscure labels. |

I think you are talking about David Andrew, who left Costco in 2002 (I think). The Sam's Club wine buyer was Bob Paulinski who joined Sam's in 2002 but was not associated with David Andrew or Costco. Incidentally, Paulinski has since left Sam's in 2007 and went to CostPlus World Market. |

Mediorce pricing on the 05?
I purchase lafite, mouton, haut brion, cheval all for around $700 with no advance money down. The current market is between $1,000 and $1,800 a bottle. I am confused with your premise. |

The premise is the market price at the time of purchase, not now. Many of the the top 2005's have continued to increase in value. However, when Costco first made the wines available, their price was about the same or slightly better than the current market at that time. The 2000's & 2003's were well below market at the time they were offered. |

You are comparing apples to Oranges. For the 2000 and 2003 vintages, Costco did not offer futures pre-orders like they did for 2005. When their 2000 and 2003 reached the shelves, yes, their shelve prices remained low compared to the then market prices. Just like the 2005 retail non-futures prices. There is not much room for Costco to lower futures' prices. In fact, most of the futures prices are fairly close between the sellers. Now fast forward to present, I have thus far picked up Pontet-Canet $79.99 Rausan-Ségla $89.99 Angelus $243.99 Canon-la-Gaffelière $87.99 Caronne Ste. Gemme $13.99 Clos du Marquis $49.99 Cos d'Estournel $183.99 Figeac $119.99 Montrose $104.99 Vieux Chateau Certan $168.99, and Smith Haut Lafitte $69.99. All these were bought from the display shelves and not futures purchases. Now if you check others' retail prices, I think you will find Costco's price significantly better in most cases. Even in off years, I suspect Costco will still maintain its low price retailer status. |
