Just saw that Sarah & Spark Marquis have teamed up with Costco to bring the Kirkland signature Roogle Shiraz..2004 was $9.99.

I think the Roogle is a great value. Huge fruit bomb but with enough structure to hold it together.
Sacramento (Cal Expo) Costco: 2004 Two Hands Bella's Garden, $53.99. Outstanding wine, one of the best Australian shirazes I've ever had. |

2004 Leoville Las Cases $84.99 173830
2004 Mondavi Reserve $91.99 260918 Also saw Dead Arm 2005 in both 750s (under $50, didn't get the price or item #) and Magnums (under $100, ditto) And 2003 Ironstone Pressings *still* at $29.97 - surprised there's any of that left. http://scmwine.wikispaces.com http://scmwine.blogspot.com http://blogs.sun.com/davetong http://twitter.com/davetong |

Just curious for those that have purchased wine at Costco. Have you had concerns about the condition of these wines stored in this warehouse especially for a wine that needs to be layed down for a few years?
A better price on an expensive wine that wasn't properly stored may be more expensive after all is said and drunk.... |

I dont have a great concern as their inventory changes so often here that a bottle spends very little time in the costco warehouse. But I do also still keep all my receipts. They have the best return policy of anyplace I know. I have not had to return any bottles, my father has returned a couple.

Nope. As DesertWineGuy says they get through so much it's barely a concern. Those huge barns of stores always seem to be a fairly constant temperature. And unlike many wine stores, the good wines are almost invariably displayed horizontally.
I'd be more concerned about how the wine got to the store, and from that viewpoint I would bet that their storage and transport system is way better than any small wine shop, no matter how high-end they may be. http://scmwine.wikispaces.com http://scmwine.blogspot.com http://blogs.sun.com/davetong http://twitter.com/davetong |

I agree with Dave that Costco generally displays the 'better' wines horizontally. Actually, at my Costco, all the wines are in bins horizontally, except for the really inexpensive stuff. I don't really feel too concerned buying wine...or anything for that matter...at Costco. And yes, their return policy is absolutely unrivaled.

I stocked up on 03 last November. They usually get in some more d'Yquem around Xmas time too. They have had the 03 halvies there for a few months. I have a bunch of 05's purchased on futures already that I think other than to try one, I will skip 04. How much Sauternes does one need ? 01, 03, 05 all fantastic, and 06 is the next hype. 07 is gonna suck, but by 2010 os so when they would be released, our 01's will start coming into it all. They have all kinds of cheap white Burg at my local costco now,as well as the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia for under a hundered bucks I think. Mondavi Reserve has been there for months, as well as the Dead Arm, and a few others. Aussie stickies too. I am hoping they get the Taylor 20 year Tawny back in for xmas too. I think it was $23 bucks or so. Nice to keep in a decanter on the bar .... |

I have only avoided wines at Costco twice.
Once when the wines were displayed under a skylight. Some of the wines shown had labels that were badly faded. The second time, the 2000 Bordeaux display at a different Costco. The corks were coming out of the bottles by a quarter inch or more. Their normal wine guy was on vacation and the wines had just arrived. When I pointed this out to the manager, he pulled all the wines. The normal wine guy told me all of the wine was returned to the wholesaler. I have noted that in the past several years, Costco has moved all their wine displays to the cooler part of the store, near the meat counters, etc. I agree the turner over, especially on high end wines is so quick the wines are fine. I think this whole issue was a urban myth started by wine retailers who couldn't or wouldn't compete with Costco's prices. That's fine, but I have run into far too many destoyed wines in conventional wine stores to think Costco is a demon on the issue. No good deed goes unpunished |

check ur costco's for some good deals..most are sitting on a ton of wine on their docks with no where to put as they prepare for the holidays. Was there yesterday, spoke to the wine guy and they were just starting to mark wine down to make room for new arrivals. Best deal i saw so far was 05 Duval Plexus for $12. They had some white burg and spanish reds marked down from $60 to $30 burt i cant recall names. Going back today to see what they got.

Can someone recommend an LA area Costco with a good (for Costco) selection of Bordeaux? I'm in the San Gabriel Valley, and the closest I've found so far is Irvine.

The one in Culver City:
13463 Washington Boulevard Marina del Rey, California 90292 I have not been there recently but they used to have a good selection of Bordeaux. |

If you spot the Kirkland Syrah 05, check out the back label. Then buy one. Or six.
Also in today's Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/25/fashion/25costco.html?_r=1&oref=slogin I thought we were the only ones that got Chanterelles. |
