Cookie- I'll let you know later, I'm planning a trip this afternoon.

You do realize that it is permitted for other members to contribute to the Illinois reports, right? Smile

(PS are you an ebober? I've gotten a tip or two lurking there, which is one of the reasons why I continue to post here)

Nope. The NMB, 595 and Sample Rd have all recently had the same stuff... 01 Insignia, a few Italians (Banfi Brunello, IIRC and a few stray Argianos) also some Don Melchor cab left.

It's all pretty old news. Nothing too exciting.

Has the Don Melchor hit the Bay Area Costco's at all? I've not seen any, and The Wine Club are all out.

I believe Novato had it a while back, before the score got released.

In lincoln park today there were some new old Aussies. Interesting, but nothing to die for.

All Peter Lehmann:
1998 Eight Songs Shiraz $40
1997 Mentor $40
1997 Stonewall $50 (?)

I took a couple of eight songs. Even that is marginal value at $40.

Thanks Dude.

I found something at the Westlake Village store that would interest you. What sucks is I only found one bottle and not even an empty bin or a shelf talker.

2001 Domaine des Baumard Savennières Clos du Papillon Item # 914255

There was one bottle sitting loose and no indication that it even existed. Have you seen any of this and can we get some more ?

Thanks for the report. I'm going to head to the Kendall store soon and I'll report back.

For whites, 2004 Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc should be widely available at Costcos, $12.69 or so is the price tag. 2004 Nobilo Icon Sauvignon Blanc should also be available in the same price range. Time to time, 2001 or 2002 German Riesling will still pop up, usually south of $15, should all be very nice.

For reds, look for Australia or varietals other than Cab or Merlot from California. Greg Norman line should fit the bill nicely, especially considering most Australian wine are more fruit forward and easier accepted by casual wine crowds.

Thank You Pyang, But I could not find one of these at Costco yesterday??

LadyInRed,

Here is the item # for 2004 Kim Crawford. Take it with you next time you are at Costco and have the Membership Service staff to the search. They will be able to tell you which location has the wine in the vicinity.

2004 Kim Crwaford Sauv Blanc - #296058

As with any other wine at Costco, it's best to have the item # with you so they can check the availability in the area.

I'd love to know what the * means on the Costco "shelf talker" - some wines have it, others don't. What does it indicate? Is it related to the $XX.97 price tag?

I was once told the * means it is not going to be reordered or is discontinued. I have observed that it does not mean the price is marked down.

I'm particularly interested to know what the secret codes on the shelf talkers mean;
we know (or think we know) about the $xx.97 price tag meaning some kind of a
closeout discount and the * which according to Wine Nightly means the wine
is discontinued - are there others that we don't know about?

In an ideal world I'd like a list of all their item numbers for wines.
I have seen printouts on music-ruled paper.

I'll check with my contact next time I see him. The questions you have may be easier to ask at the warehouse instead of over the phone.

wish I knew how to do the quote thingy...

I was in the Prescott AZ store today and struck up a conversation with the girl who handles the "wine boat" (that wooden thing in the center aisle with the high dollar wines on it. Anyway, she told me that the xx.97 was a reduction price, not necessarily meaning that they are getting rid of it. The asterisk means that it is a closeout and won't be reordering for a while, but not necessarily a close out price. Also, xx.88 is also a reduced price item. She told me that there are no other secrets to the signs. In adddition she let me know that the "Christmas" wines will soon arrive and that the display will be twice as big.

One other thing, they had the Domaine des Baumard, lots of it, for like $15, but it was both the 2000 and 2002.

Other things...
2002 Peachy Canyon Zin Westside $11.99
WS TN listed at $19
2001 Ferrari Carrano Siena $17.69
WS no TN

So, a little help please...
how do I know if it is a good price or not? They sometimes list a rating but several times not the right year. I buy Italian, so I know basically those prices. I don't buy much else. All of my other bottles are bought by my friend who is the wine buyer at a restaurant, and we always get our bottles at cost...therefor I have no price comparison.
Back to the question...how do I knwo if it is a good QPR, Costco is over an hour drive one way.
Thanks.

asv,

The only way to really find out if the wine at Costco is at better price than anywhere else is checking through wine-searcher.com.

I have a general idea of what the good price should be, but when I am not sure and standing right there at Costco, I usually call a friend to do a quick check on winesearcher to be sure.
